Considering an HR Course at HR House Bangalore: Is It Worth the Investment for Career Transition?

Hi, introducing myself, I am Shobha from Bangalore, working as a Technical Consultant. I have been working for the last 7 years, during which the last 2 years have involved recruitments in both IT and ITES. Now, I want to transition into a Generalist profile. To support this goal, I am planning to take an HR course from HR House Bangalore. Can anyone provide information about HR House? Is it reputable? What are the prospects of such a course? Is it worth enrolling in?

Even I was in the same situation. I was a System Admin and EDP executive; both roles were technical. I learned Payroll while working as an EDP Executive. I had around 8 years of experience in EDP. I felt that some courses on HR would help me in getting an HR job. Moreover, I didn't do an MBA or a diploma course in HR.

My Experience with HR House

I joined HR House in the Koramangala Branch. Our batch was the first at that branch. They gave a bit of an idea about HR and IR. They assured us that they would provide job opportunities, but none of our batch mates got a job from HR House.

Later, I pursued my MBA through distance learning from Madras University and, with a lot of effort, I gained knowledge in HR and compliance.

In fact, I joined a consultancy firm for a lower salary than I was drawing to gain experience. I worked at that consultancy office for 1 year and gained sufficient knowledge in Payroll, compliance, and statutory requirements.

Now, I am working as an HR/Admin Manager for a small IT industry.

In my case, and for other individuals, HR House didn't help. I am not saying it is not useful, but you should put effort into learning the Generalist role.

If you are planning to do a short-term course, and if I am correct, it would be a certification course. Below mentioned are a few courses in HR that I have completed, and you could opt for one of them:

- Certified Trainer and Facilitator
- Certified Learning and Development Manager
- Certified Compensation and Benefit Manager
- Certified Recruitment Analyst / Psychometric Test Professional
- Certified Performance System Analyst
- Certified Employment Law Professional

Apart from these, you could also try:

- Thomas Profiling
- NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming)
- Landmark Forums

Hi Coolhero, Thanks again for the prompt reply . To be frank, I am looking for a course that would teach me the responsibilities of a Generalist, i.e., if I can put it this way - an "All in one" kind of course.

A General HR profile covers a wide spectrum of HR activities. Any management course you take in HR will touch upon activities related to the General HR profile from a theoretical standpoint. What I mean to say is, for instance, if you have to face a compliance audit by a labor officer, studies will help you understand the acts and laws. However, dealing with a labor officer requires interpersonal skills, communication, and negotiating skills, which you can only gain through practical experience in handling these issues. I would suggest taking a course in HR to enhance your knowledge.

I am based in Mumbai and have no idea about HR House.

Hi Dev, That's right. There's a huge difference between theoretical knowledge and practical application, and that is where I am confused. I already hold a PG Diploma in HR, which I completed through distance learning from Symbiosis. During those days, books were read just to get through the exams and earn a degree, not to gain knowledge, at least in my case.

So, what I have thought is to re-read those HR books and simultaneously do a course at HR House. Once done with the course, I am unsure about where to start. Would you mind sharing your path after the certifications you mentioned? Are you currently working in a Generalist profile?
