Can Playing Music at Work Really Boost Employee Productivity? Let's Discuss!

Dear HR Professionals,

This is Deepak, working with a Pharma MNC as an HR Executive. CiteHR is an excellent forum for all HR professionals, especially newcomers like me. I would like to take this opportunity to share my query with all my colleagues and senior HR professionals, as mentioned in the title. I am sure there are a lot of people who have gone through this experience and will share it with all of us.

Can anyone help me understand, "Can music at the workplace enhance the productivity of employees?"

Music at the workplace can definitely be a motivator for employees as it reduces work stress. Soft music could be played on the work premises. I have seen in diamond industries where diamond cutters have to work patiently, and a lot of concentration is required. Music is being played there because their job is very tedious, and it has been observed that it enhances their productivity and quality of work. Even loud music doesn't affect their concentration. Nowadays, doctors also use music therapy while performing surgeries.

I have seen in Pizza Hut where, once a week, all waiters can dance to music while serving. Then why not at the workplace?

To my mind, soft music could be played.

Music in the workplace does help with creativity as well as productivity. I came across a report that confirmed the difference in performance of a group when they were treated to Mozart's Symphony.

I am a PhD candidate and Music Consultant, currently researching the effects of music listening in offices. Music can be hugely beneficial for some but very distracting for others. I would say that there are no easy answers to how music can best be used in an office. There are many complex factors to be aware of. The best thing is to evaluate and analyze each office environment on a case-by-case basis to get the right balance.

I am a final year student at Cass Business School in London, and I am researching whether music increases productivity for those doing repetitive tasks. After reading your posts, I would be interested to know if anyone has actually implemented music in the workplace and seen actual results of improvement.
