Maintaining a Legal Register: How Often Should We Review and Revise It?

As per standard requirements, we are maintaining a Legal register that is applicable to our industry. However, in our HSE procedure, it is mentioned that the Legal register is reviewed once a quarter and revised once every six months.

1. According to the standard requirement, how should we maintain the document (quarterly review file and half-yearly revised file)?

2. If there are no new amendments or changes in the legal register, what should be done?

The organization is supposed to know the legal requirements applicable to it. You can visit the websites of all legal laws for any changes. You can also subscribe to agencies like M/s Webstac, which regularly provide updates on all EHS legal laws for a nominal fee. Additionally, you can engage with social bodies that arrange training programs in these areas.

In case there are any changes in applicability to your organization, they should be studied, and if applicable, the legal register should be revised. In our case, we update the legal register whenever there is an amendment or notification, without waiting for the prescribed 3 or 6 months to address the changes in our system.
