The scope for HR is promising, with many specialties you can choose to master your career in. Recruitment is one of the specialties most sought after by consultancies and corporates. The HR Generalist role is also a great profile to acquire. In the end, it all comes down to your area of interest in the HR field. Talk to all kinds of HR professionals from different specialties and learn about their experiences, satisfaction levels, and challenges to conclude your choice.

In my personal opinion, recruitment is exciting and challenging at the same time. I can say recruitment is the most important function in the HR domain. I will try my best to summarize the attributes of recruitment based on my experience:

• It provides more exhaustive exposure to industries, processes, functions, job grades, levels, pay scales, employment trends, etc.

• One gets to know the amazing types, variety, and diversity of applications from different locations.

• It's highly interactive in its reach and sources, including phones, SMS, emails, face-to-face interactions, social sites, campus, volume drives, etc.

• It's target-based, with measurable performance standards and numbers.

• It provides humorous moments; when so much interaction with fellow humans is involved, fun is bound to be there.

• Learning and development of self are faster, quicker, and more satisfying.

• Make more friends, and make lives and careers.

• It's one of the noble ways to help people get a job, income, respect, affiliation, and most of all, meaning in life.

Understanding HR Roles and Career Paths

HR consists of various functionalities like payroll, recruitment, appraisal, etc. It generally depends on the profile you have chosen. Even an HR generalist profile handles all responsibilities simultaneously.

Your recruitment experience in consultancy will make you an expert in the area of recruitment only, where you will learn to coordinate with candidates, work on your communication, follow-ups, etc. Maybe you will become a recruitment coordinator for some MNC as your scope increases in the recruitment role. Hence, it is important to choose a profile/path you want to pursue because if you observe the profiles of generalists/HR in big firms, they often require 4 or 5 years of experience in various areas. Therefore, it's better to start your career with a generalist profile in a smaller firm if you aim to engage in core HR activities. You will learn multiple roles, which will be advantageous for you.

Personal Experience in HR Career Development

I wanted to share my experience where I started my career in a consultancy, handling almost 50 calls daily. I was technically understanding the requirements, sourcing candidates, and finally forwarding them to clients who scheduled face-to-face interviews and selected candidates. The job was interesting as I improved my communication skills, learned what questions to ask, and gained technical knowledge. However, when I observed job descriptions for big firms, they required experience in core HR. So, I changed my job and started working for a small IT company in a generalist profile. I am happy because I am accountable for all HR responsibilities and managing all areas. Now, if an opportunity in a bigger firm arises, at least I can apply for it as I am eligible for every HR profile.

Hence, it's better to start as an HR generalist, and it's good to work for a company rather than a consultancy.

The Importance of Sourcing

Sourcing is an interesting and highly sought-after skill for a recruiter. It involves finding the right candidate. In a large operation support, this is critical for the Recruitment Division because finding the right quality and quantity of a person at the time when the Ops requires is not easy.

Recruiters/HR professionals use online databases like Naukri and Monster, as well as referrals and consultancy support (like the one you are working at now). Good recruiters find innovative ways to identify the right pool and maintain an excellent professional network in the given field.

It pays greatly if you have broad industry experience, making you flexible and ever in demand.

Focus Areas in Recruitment

Apart from sourcing, you may also focus on interview techniques, negotiation, selection techniques, interview drive management, recruitment strategy planning, and campus recruitment, which are different functions and flavors of recruitment options available in India. This should be purely based on your interest to build a long-term career and succeed. Once you achieve comfortable exposure and experience, you may opt for high-level recruitment, also called executive search (for candidates) and retained search partnership (for organizations).

I have found that a lot of new graduates spend a lot of time in the scene without much clarity, hence I came up with an interesting learning program. My candidates benefited from an excellent career while in return I benefited from an excellent response. We sometimes engage in joint operations for niche domestic (PAN India) requirements.
