How Do You Handle Worker Grading in Manufacturing? Seeking Advice on Promotion and Satisfaction

Nasiruddin Sardar
Can anyone help me in understanding the workers grading system in any manufacturing organization? I am working for a manufacturing company, and we have 3 grades for workers - skilled, semi-skilled, and unskilled. Sometimes, I have talked to some management professionals regarding workers' dissatisfaction over their non-promotion. Some have suggested to keep it as it is and just pay a hike in the salary. Some have advised creating more grades. I am confused about what to do.

Hence, I would request all of you to put your valuable comments and experience regarding workers' grading along with the merits and demerits of the same.

With kind regards,
Nasir

Hi Nasir,

You can do many things to provide more opportunities for employees to grow, such as implementing a grade system for staff members. For instance, you could introduce titles like Jr. Operator / Operator / Sr. Operator and clearly define the roles and minimum benefits associated with each level. This approach can motivate workers to strive harder to progress to the next stage.

Additionally, you can enhance employee satisfaction by introducing various beneficial schemes to recognize their efforts. Given that your workforce consists of both skilled and semi-skilled individuals, they are likely to appreciate such forms of recognition.

I hope these suggestions are helpful in getting started.

Regards,
Rajiv
