Worried About a Mistake in Your Educational Details? Here's What to Do Next

ablutophobic
Hi, I recently got recruited by a big IT firm through my campus placements. My 12th-grade percentage was 73.8, but I mistakenly wrote 74.8. It was a genuine error on my part. Will this cause me to lose my job? I am really worried and looking forward to some valuable suggestions.

Also, I would like to add that this mistake was in my CV. In the employment application form, all the information was correct.

Thank you for your suggestion. But I wanted to know if I must inform them. I mean, is this mistake that serious? Won't it create a bad impression of me? I was planning to wait until they discover it and then clarify it. Will it not be acceptable then?

It is not a serious mistake; still, you should tell them and not wait for them to discover it. Had you not spotted the mistake, the case would have been different.

Please inform them and ensure that it is corrected. I opine that it is not a serious mistake because you have submitted the copies of all certificates, etc., and it is in the CV, not in the company application. The data in the company application is more relevant and binding.

I agree; please inform the company that the application you submitted is correct and that there was an inadvertent mistake in the resume you provided earlier. It is important to ensure that the information on company documents is accurate and up to date.

Thank you.

Working with a background verification company, it's not a serious mistake you have made. Please make sure you inform your HR in advance. Also, ensure you have provided a genuine copy of your marks card.

Hi, it's hardly any difference; you are still a good performer!  Good advice by members here.

Don't worry about the mistakes; just send an apology letter by email to the company HR for physical evidence. Remember, the corporate world appreciates honesty and integrity.

All the best.

Although there is not much difference, it is a false statement that should be brought to the knowledge of the management. Instead, they should investigate it thoroughly and take appropriate action. Please draft an application addressing this matter.

Sir, it's better to inform them of your mistake before they find out. Once they discover it, you may feel guilty. Your brain processes will not work properly, and then you will feel sad. Remember, sir.

Girish.

It's not a big mistake. As you have mentioned correctly in the company form, there is no mistake in it. Just tell the concerned person that you have wrongly mentioned it in your CV and have updated it correctly. It won't create any bad impression on you; rather, it will demonstrate honesty and a genuine quality in you.

Thanks and Regards,

Don't worry. Even if it is considered a serious mistake and you do not get the job, it is better not to work in a company that finds fault for this kind of small, unintentional mistake.

Honesty is and shall remain the best policy in any sphere of life. Acknowledging a mistake, however small, is all the more appreciated for putting things in perspective, be it through a small correction or a big, detailed explanation. Just write, apologize, and request a correction to be made to the concerned.

I can recount numerous examples in my professional life for that, but that is not required here. Mark my words - an oral pat on the back by a very senior person adds to your stature more than a paper enhancement of your emoluments.

Warm regards,
Shivkumar R.

I can suggest two options:

1. Just go over to your HR Department. Go straight to the person who is supposed to maintain your records and calmly tell them that this has happened inadvertently. Please correct it now.

2. Just go over to them, hand over a copy of your updated (corrected) CV, and request them to keep it in your file since it is updated with the change of address, phone number, etc.

Don't simply send a correction letter and remain quiet. And don't worry; it is not a serious mistake. After all, you didn't get this job just because of that 2% mark.

All the best.

Nobody bothers about the percentage of marks. Only performance will speak. Don't worry, nothing happens.

You have been recruited through campus placement. That CV may not be preserved for a long time. Perhaps it may not be available as such in the company now. However, what has happened is unintentional. You might have erroneously left the percentage of marks entry of the previous person, maybe your friend's.

So, like some of our friends have suggested, don't worry. Building confidence based on performance is more important. Do that... Climb the ladder... and of course, this company is not your DESTINATION.

ALL THE BEST,

Thank you to all the members for your valuable suggestions. I am pleased to inform you that I have contacted HR regarding this matter via email. In response, she thanked me for bringing the issue to her attention and assured me not to worry as she will take care of the necessary changes in the database. I cannot express how relieved I feel. I truly appreciate it. 

Hi, it's not that big of a worry, but you should inform the management as early as possible to avoid further complications.

Please note that human error is always acceptable. Kindly inform your local HR to rectify the same and drop a mail to them regarding the mistake that occurred. Also, track everything through email, as confirmation via email is always safe; moreover, nobody will raise questions against you in the future, even if it is discovered. Don't worry!

Hi, having submitted the necessary certificates, also, the mistake is not major, but do not lose time in informing this inadvertent mistake. Please do so quickly.

It's not an issue unless your candidature is shortlisted based on academic percentage.
