How "Chak De" Inspires Confidence and Team Building Through Its Storytelling

Dear All,

A must-see movie. Well-directed and well-acted too! I will refrain from telling the complete storyline (most of you might be aware though :)). It deals with problems with attitude, behavior, and complacency. It very well depicts the lessons on confidence building, determination, belief in oneself, goal setting, team building, and coaching. Please do watch if you get a chance.

Cheers! Surbhi

I agree, Surbhi.

What I could gather from the movie was:
1. Dream
2. Never Give Up
3. You will always need someone to make your dream a reality.

Definitely a good movie, apart from motivation, confidence, determination, team building, and hard work. It is a patriotic movie which touches all the nerves of the body, a must-watch.

Dear All,

Yesterday, I went to "Chak De." What a fabulous film! Great!

More related to our HR problems that we face now and then. Dealing with issues like attitude, behavior, complacency, and more with ego. It is better to excel in Confidence Building, Determination, Belief in Oneself, Goal Setting, Team Building, and Coaching that can transform an average team into the world's best.

A must-watch movie for the entire HR fraternity.

With regards,
Anitha K.

Hi All,

I think that from an organizational point of view, teamwork is the most important. You cannot achieve a goal single-handedly, and this was very well shown in the movie.

If you are looking at movies as a source of inspiration for all the qualities mentioned in this thread, I guess "Chak De.." is a very poor example. The movie is nothing but a glossily done copy-paste job from several other great movies of the sports movie genre.

"Chak De.." is more like a street magic show where we see things happening for no rhyme and reason. We still enjoy the show knowing fully well that all that's happening in front of us is just sleight of hand and not the truth.

Consider the following...

1. A federation hell-bent upon not sending the team to the World Cup does just that (send them) only because of a few people clapping. Aaah! Wish things were that easy.

2. Players who rebel against an "Autocratic" coach in one scene accept him like slaves in the very next scene. Did the scriptwriter or director bother to tell us WHY?

3. Seniors in the team who are stubborn enough not to relent on playing in a position different from one they're used to even during a practice match suddenly become the guardian angels of the team. Why this happened is again left to the viewers' wild and vivid imagination.

4. Two star players can't see eye to eye and are fighting with each other more bitterly than our very own parliamentarians suddenly become the best of chums. Why? Because one of them feels so much for the other wanting to prove a point to her MCP boyfriend, that she sacrifices her own dreams for the poor dame. Credit us with a little more intelligence please.

And then there are many more things....

If anyone around has seen a movie called "Hip Hip Hurray" (a movie from the 80's with a star cast of also-rans), you'll see a far better illustration of the qualities like attitude, teamwork, self-belief, and the value of coaching. Here's an IMDB link to it: Click Here. And if you can lay your hands on a CD or DVD for the movie, grab it. It's a collector's item.

In this movie, Raj Kiran is coaching a school football team that's used to losing every match it plays. The seniors in the team are bullies. The good players are full of arrogance. The parents don't want their children to play because it hampers their studies. The school principal doesn't pay any attention to the basic amenities the team needs as in his opinion, they're going to lose anyways. See the parallels with "Chak De.."? Here, the coach has to labor hard to bring about a change. The way he addresses the issue to the principal and the skeptical parents is beautiful. The way he instills qualities of teamwork in the players is fabulous.

SRK doesn't break a sweat while doing any of that. They say that he did a deglamourised role in "Chak De.." but in my opinion, the only deglamourised things about his role were the fact that he didn't have anyone to romance with and his stubble. Otherwise, he was very much the superhuman hero he usually is on screen. Instead of using his hands though, he used dialogues.

And I haven't even talked about some Hollywood movies where the sports genre is an established one. Watch movies like "Field of Dreams," "Any Given Sunday," "Remember the Titans," and all. Forget Hollywood, our very own "Lagaan" was a far better showcase of the said qualities than "Chak De."
