Can I Grow in My Recruitment Career Without Other HR Experience? Seeking Advice

Dear Senior, I have 3 years of experience in recruitment only and don't have experience in other HR activities. Please let me know if in recruitment I can have growth prospects or not. I am currently associated with a renowned company.

Thank you for responding. It would be great if you could help me with what things I can learn, as I am responsible for recruitments at all levels, from top to senior positions. Currently, I only handle preliminary rounds of the candidates, with further rounds conducted by my seniors. Unfortunately, in my company, there is no opportunity for me to be involved in other HR activities. This situation is quite frustrating for me.

The HR role doesn't end with recruitment; in fact, it has just started. Many other areas follow. A successful recruiter is a good omen to shine at the next level. An HR professional will face challenges from the next level onwards. For this, you have to be equipped with knowledge of all labor-related laws and the overall functioning of your organization, and maintain a good working rapport with other HODs.

Steps to Enhance Your HR Career

As a first step, you must have an overall knowledge of the laws of the land. The attached notes will help you get a glimpse of such acts. Also, you must possess at least the Bare Acts of all these laws, which will be handy for reference. It is beneficial for you as you are in a renowned company, and hopefully, many of the relevant provisions are already in vogue there. That makes it easier. Involve yourself in other activities of your HRD, which will project you as a proactive person and serve as a stepping stone. Keep updating your knowledge by reading or referring to the latest developments, case laws, and citeHR, which is one such resource.

Each HR sub-process has significant potential in itself. Recruitment, over the years, has evolved into a very scientific process with a vast knowledge base available to approach it systematically. The reason is that a wrong selection can become a liability for the organization. Therefore, providing the right candidate is a challenging competency. Once you are determined to pursue this portfolio, things will fall into place automatically for you. Just remember, never enter any portfolio with doubts.

Recruitment is not a useless aspect of HR. There is a lot that you can do and learn within recruitment. I am not sure if you have been involved in various types of hiring such as mass hiring, campus hiring, vendor management, headhunting, technical hiring, hiring for senior management, etc. It is a vast field. Additionally, there are hundreds of recruitment metrics that you need to know and follow. Have you covered all of these?
