Feeling Pressured by Colleagues' Comments: Should I Resign from My Marketing Job?

I am working as a marketing executive in a company for the past 2 years. In the first 1.5 years, the sales from my side were very good, but for the past 6 months, there have been no sales for the product I am dealing with. My management is not pressuring me about the product sales, but my colleagues have been commenting that the company is paying me a salary even though I am not contributing much. Comments like these have led me to consider resigning from my job.

Please advise me if my decision is correct or not.

In your post, you have added the last sentence "Life is a journey, not a destination." If you are such a positive person, why worry about these meaningless thoughts from your colleagues? You are working for the company, not for them. So, forget everything—comments, loose talks—and concentrate on your work. These are tools that can spoil your performance, so keep them away and do your best, whatever is possible for you. If you have any issues regarding the product or its marketing, discuss them with the concerned persons and try to find remedies. After all, the salary is paid by management, not by them, so leave the decision of resigning the job for these reasons.

I second what Atul has said. The question is, why is there no demand for the product? Believe in the adage "Bricks and stones hurt my bones, but name-calling does not hurt me." Turn a deaf ear to what your colleagues say. What will you do after resigning? It's better to look for a job when in one rather than when unemployed, as you will lose the power of bargaining.

Concentrate on fixing your problem and try to create demand for the product. Rest assured, don't listen to anything that hampers your concentration. All the best.

Suneetha, I understand your concern, but instead of leaving this job, you need to try to increase sales for your company and not worry about others and their comments. It's very usual to encounter this kind of behavior in your field from subordinates and others. However, resignation is not a solution to your problem.

Consider Your Seniors' Perspective

Second, when your seniors have no complaints, even though there is no sale for the product you are responsible for, it indicates that you have done a good job in the past. Your seniors have faith in you that you will perform well again and regain your form. Just think about what you are going to do or are thinking about. Do you really want to let down your seniors who have faith in you, or do you want to show all other employees who are passing comments on your performance that you can again achieve good sales for your company?

Strategize for Success

You just need to be more strategic and quick and find ways to increase sales of this product for your company. Consider what you should do in this regard.

Evaluate the Impact of Changing Jobs

By changing your job, entering a new environment, and working with a new employer and colleagues/seniors, do you really think that they will never expect you to perform well consistently? Or do you think you can do much more with a new employer/new job but not here in your present job?

Resignation

You should not be unduly perturbed by others' comments. You have already proved your talent as the product performed very well in the first six months. There will be cycles of highs and lows in sales, and it is part of the game. Regarding your decision to resign because of others' comments, we cannot control others' tongues, but we can control our thoughts. So let us focus on what we can control rather than what we cannot. Think big always.

I remember a story about Gautam Buddha. Gautam Buddha, with his knowledge and wisdom, attracted people and became very popular with the masses. This made some scholars in the town jealous since they could not become as popular as Buddha despite their knowledge of scriptures. So when Buddha was meditating silently under a tree, they used to heckle him and make fun of him. But Buddha did not move nor show any signs of disturbance. When one of his disciples asked him how he remained calm, Buddha gave an example, saying, suppose someone is offering you a coin; if you accept it, it remains in your possession, but if you do not accept it, it remains with the person who has offered it to you. Therefore, he told his disciple that he would not take all this to his head, and therefore, they do not affect him. Similarly, remain unconcerned about the comments; soon, they will stop. Focus on the present, be innovative, and search for solutions on how you can improve sales. You can learn a lot. Look at every challenge as an opportunity to learn and develop a solution-centric mindset.
