Struggling with Interview Question: How to Explain Why You Left Your Last Job?

karthik_Kartz
Hi, I am Karthik. After constantly attending interviews, I am still struggling to provide an appropriate answer to the question, "Why did you leave your last organization?" Although my answers vary each time, I am unable to impress the interviewer. I feel really helpless and unsure of what to say because the real reason was work overload and issues created by my immediate boss, which I cannot disclose to the interviewer. Please, please, please help me. I am desperate to get a job. Please help. 

You have two reasons: one is your immediate boss, and the second one is workload. When talking about your workload, never put anyone down as we may meet them at any stage.

Thank you, Bhanu, for your input. If the interviewer asks, "Are you afraid of workload or is the same situation present here as well?" then how should I tackle it? Would the interviewer think I am running away from my responsibilities? Or should I go for it and answer the interviewer, "I was unable to handle much workload"?

During the interview, you can mention that there was limited opportunity for learning in your project, which prompted you to seek new challenges for your career growth by leaving your previous company.

Regarding workload, you can explain that there were timing issues that affected your ability to work late hours consistently. For example, you may prefer not to work late hours as a regular practice.

Make sure to convey these points clearly and professionally during your interview.

One thing you can mention is the distance. You can explain that your previous company was quite far away, making commuting a challenge for you.

Answering the Question: "Why Did You Leave Your Last Organization?"

The answer can be, "Since I learned many things from the old company, I want to test them with another company for their effectiveness. There are experts in my previous company, and I was in their shadow, unable to utilize my potential. Hence, the change."

Regards.
