Training And Development - Training And Developement [Thread 375604]

what is the difference between training and development?
aussiejohn
Many people would say they are pretty much one and the same thing. But here is a quote I found from leadership writer John Maxwell:
“When we train people, we focus on the job. When we develop people, we focus on the person. When we train people, we’re adding value to specific things, such as what their job description is. When we develop people, we add value to everything. They not only become better in their jobs, they become better in life. Employee training is a necessity for any business that wants to remain competitive in today’s marketplace. But leaders who want to make a lasting difference also recognize that training by itself is not enough. Training people is helpful for a short time, Developing people is helpful for a lifetime. And while the result of training is changed performance ….. The result of development is changed lives.”
Hope that helps.

Dear S. Rama krishnan,
Training is short term process given by enhancing specific skills and development is long term process .

Training is the input from you or HR to person on certain field/ process and technical field etc. Development is the feedback from the trainee or assessment by you that how much he devleoped on the respective field. We can say is development is the OUTPUT of the Process and Training is the INPUT on the same. Thanks and Regards

Dear,
Training may be for present need just to enhance the skills of person. But development of employees is done considering for future needs of an organization. The training modules are prepared for the same and employees are selected for this purpose.

development is the outcome of training.
training is the source of development.
the effect of training could only be seen and measured in development

Both are operational terms in HRD. Training and Development implies Executive Training and Management Development- inwhich the former is given to supervisory categories/executives to impart skills to upgrade the current performance, whereas the later is given to managerial people (middle / top level) aims at providing knowledge. Training is more of technical and development helps for overall growth (OD) of an individual.

hi ram,
you have different philanthropic meaning to the terms training and development, in Hr Language and in the industry, training is given to the blue collar employees i.e workers for developing certain skills for a job whereas development is given to the white collar employees i.e executives and managers BY refining and enlarging their capability for present and future requirements.
following is a trivial difference between T & D
tRAINING
It is usually targeted in most cases for non-managerial personnel
The aim here is to develop specific skill in an individual
It is a one-shot affair
It is mostly the result of some outside motivation
dEVELOPMENT
It is meant usually for managerial personnel
The aim here is to develop the total personality of the individual
It is a continuous process
Development is the result of internal motivation
It is a proactive process
Development may not be led by an instructor

Examples of Training are - Product Training, Job Training etc. Development is where in you assist an employee in the overall development of his personality by giving him sessions on self improvement, Motivation, ethics, values etc.
