Hi everyone, I am Naresh. I recently completed my MBA in Human Resources and am a fresher. I have been offered a job in a company that specializes in manufacturing pharmaceutical products. The role is in the personnel department at an entry-level position.

I am currently in a dilemma about whether I should accept the job offer or not. Is this a good opportunity for a fresher like me who is looking to build a career in HR? I would appreciate it if experienced professionals could provide me with some advice on this matter.

The Importance of Starting in the Personnel Department

The core of HR functions starts from the Personnel Department. This is because it is from the Personnel Department that you will be able to learn statutory compliance, wage and compensation management, negotiations, and trade union relations, etc. That department will give you exposure that is entirely different from your classroom learning.

Since an HR professional is not competent without exposure to labor laws and industrial relation practices, it is always good to get into the Personnel Department. Once you acquire knowledge about pay fixation, statutory compliance, filing of returns, etc., you can use it even when you have climbed the higher ladders of the HR profession.

On the other hand, if you confine yourself to recruitment and other soft sides of HR, you may find it difficult to face the real problems, especially when you become the head of HR and are asked to deal with trade union leaders who are better informed about the rights of employees and the changes taking place in labor laws.
