How Do Companies in India Implement Time Off in Lieu for Holiday Work?

Anil Akuri
We have a policy of Time Off in Lieu in my company. We provide Time Off in lieu for employees who work on weekly holidays at client locations. If they work for 2 extra days on any holidays, they are eligible to take these extra days off on weekdays.

I am conducting research in the Indian market to understand how this policy is implemented in other industries or companies.

We sell IT products for the mining industry globally. Our Services team travels to client locations to provide training on our IT products, and sometimes they may have to work during weekly holidays as well.

Please share your insights if anyone has details about this policy.

Thanks,
Anil

This policy is very commonly used. It is nothing but a kind of flexibility given to the employees. This totally depends on the industry and specifically depends on the organization.

Time Off and Comp Off

Time off is also known as Comp Off. In most manufacturing companies, the comp off is equivalent to extra hours worked on a daily basis (instead of giving overtime). Once the extra worked hours reach 8 hours, employees are eligible for one comp off.

The service industry works in a different environment; they don't have the concept of comp off.

The IT industry works on a project basis. If a project is finished well before the scheduled time, the employees can enjoy time off. For example, if a 12-day project is completed in 8 days (with extended working hours during those 8 days), the remaining 4 days are given off.

Some IT companies cancel all the holidays during the week and reschedule them to the weekend, providing an extended weekend.

In conclusion, it all depends on the business and industry.
