Recently, I joined a reputed jewelry company. I have noticed that HR professionals in this industry tend to gain good exposure to manufacturing or related concerns. My question is, what HR-related concepts can I learn from this area to improve performance?

HR Functions in the Jewelry Industry

In HR, you have to handle basic HR functions such as attendance management, leave reports, salary, PF & ESI, recruitment, selection, and PMS. You also need to focus on employee relations. You can perform each and every function of HR.

I had worked with a jewelry company in the past. In jewelry, you need to focus on attrition among designers as good designers are always in demand and often strive to become merchandisers, which is not actually their core field. Their success rate as merchandisers is pretty low. A new incentive scheme needs to be devised if there is attrition in your company.

Another important aspect is compliance. Many jewelry companies operate on the border of non-compliance. Piece-rated employees are always a security risk as trends of flicking pieces and dust have been prevalent since the industry came into existence.

I am Sudhir, an HR Executive since 2008. I have experience in the jewelry industry where approximately 400 employees are working. The HR responsibilities include maintaining employee records individually, conducting joining formalities, generating and manually checking attendance, and recruiting employees based on appearance, especially in the jewelry sector. We are also involved in statutory activities, conducting employee appraisals, and preparing letter formats.
