Hi all, is there any difference between "Competency Mapping" and KPIs?

Thanks,

Hello Jyothi, One-word answer to your question - Absolutely!

Understanding Competency Mapping

Competency Mapping is the exercise conducted to 'map' or identify the competencies (core requirements) required for each position to appropriately discharge their duties. Thus, as the process suggests, it identifies the key criteria each candidate MUST possess to be in their position.

Understanding KPIs

KPIs, on the other hand, are Key Performance Indicators. That is, they are the results which an individual is expected to produce during the course of their duties, such that they will indicate to the organization that the duties are being performed at, or above, the minimum specified benchmark.

So, while KPIs (like competencies) are established prior to the commencement of duties for the relevant performance measurement period, their achievement (or not) is only ascertainable 'after the event'. That is, once duties commence.

Competencies vs. KPIs

Competencies, on the other hand, are demonstrable by a person prior to commencing their work. And, in almost every instance, this demonstration is based on their past achievements, challenges, and/or areas of improvement.

I realize my answer is really simplified; please also note that while competencies are attached to a cluster of positions, KPIs, on the other hand, are more often than not attached to an individual role.

I hope this helps!
