Understanding Show Cause Notices and Charge Sheets
A show cause notice is issued to an employee when they indulge in any misconduct, with the intent to call for an explanation for the said misconduct. It must be specific, detailing the date, time, and place of the misconduct, and clear in its communication.
After the concerned employee provides their explanation, if the management finds it satisfactory, no action needs to be taken. However, if it is evasive and unsatisfactory, the management can either punish the employee or, in the case of serious misconduct warranting harsh punishment, issue a charge sheet. A charge sheet levels charges against the employee and cites the clause of misconduct from the standing order that is applicable. It should also be very clear and specific.
