Public Holidays in Private Companies: How Many Are Required and Where to Find Reliable Info?

Can any of you tell me how many public holidays should be given compulsorily in a private company? I need a good source of reference for Leave Management.

National Holidays in India

The National Holidays are 26th Jan, 15th Aug, and 2nd Oct.

Holidays Observed Across India

Holidays to be observed across India are:
- Republic Day
- Independence Day
- Mahatma Gandhi's Birthday
- Buddha Purnima
- Christmas Day
- Dussehra (Vijay Dashami)
- Diwali (Deepavali)
- Good Friday
- Guru Nanak's Birthday
- Eid ul-Fitr
- Eid al-Adha (Bakrid)
- Mahavir Jayanti
- Muharram
- Prophet Mohammad's Birthday (Id-e-Milad)

Three holidays are decided in congruence with the State Government. An additional day for Dussehra, Holi, Janmashtami (Vaishnavi), Ram Navami, Maha Shivratri, Ganesh Chaturthi / Vinayak Chaturthi, Makar Sankranti, Rath Yatra, Onam, plus any other holiday as per the Gazette Notification of respective States.

Note your State Notification on leaves in congruence with the Central Government Notification. Normally, private companies have about 11-14 public holidays in a year.

So, does it mean that we need to give at least 9-10 days from the list provided and have compulsory closures on January 26, August 15, and October 2?

Well, that depends on how well the management and the union (if any) have congruence on the leaves. For a smaller company, you can take into account first the National Holidays, then Major State Holidays, and later fill the rest with other Secular Holidays. Also, take into account the religion and cultural bifurcation of your employees to make a consolidated list that would be fair and just. Holidays should also be taken into account after noting your industry and customer service requirements.

Yes, 1st May is Labour Day. However, if you are in Maharashtra or Gujarat State, it is celebrated as a State Holiday as these states were officially formed on this day. Apart from this, it is internationally celebrated as "Workers/Labour Day," but it is important to note that it is not a compulsory holiday as per the national gazette.
