New HR Manager Here: How Do I Start Building an HR Department from Scratch?

mintz
Hi All, I have joined as an HR in a new organization. I have no experience in HR. Can anyone please explain how to set up an HR department from scratch or the roles of an HR manager in a new organization? I know the question requires an elaborate answer, but if someone could just give me a glimpse, I would be grateful.

First of all, it depends on how big your organization is. If the total number of employees is less than 200, you can manage it yourself with an HR assistant. You will need to prepare an HR handbook with all the procedures and policies and communicate clearly with the employees about what they can expect from the HR department, especially since they did not have an HR team before.

Dear Mintu, Had you searched CiteHR using the links at the right sidebar under Similar Topics, you would have found some answers at https://www.citehr.com/322911-roles-hr-manager.html. Could you also please tell us your background and the size of the organization? I only hope you have not used your real name, as some people who read this may form a poor opinion about your lack of experience. Have a nice day.

Dear Mintz,

The performance of HR is a bridge between management and employees of an organization. It depends on the HR norms legally used by the organization along with the nature of work in the firm.

The role of HR is very important in an organization. Here are some key responsibilities:

1. Monitor employees' regular attendance.
2. Ensure proper communication between upper-level, middle-level, and lower-level employees in an organization.
3. Be aware of the welfare of employees in an organization.
4. Understand that HR positions can vary from one organization to another.
5. Ensure proper procedures for promotions and demotions.
6. Follow proper procedures for employee appointments.
7. Maintain a supportive and understanding approach towards employees.
8. Monitor and manage finances effectively.

Each of these responsibilities plays a crucial role in ensuring the smooth functioning of an organization.

Boss, my first question would be, though blunt (sorry!), how did you get appointed as an HR Manager in a startup without any experience in the first place? Just 5 months back, you were looking for an HR executive position, right?

Hi, thanks to all. A special thank you to Mr. Asif Mulla. Your attachment is quite informative.

@Zubin Kapadia, I didn't say that I am working as an HR Manager. I just wanted to know the roles. I am still working as an executive. The company is a new one. They haven't hired an HR manager yet. I was thinking of setting up some basic things before they hire the HR manager. Anything wrong with that?

Hello Mintz, while there are plenty of sources online to help you knowledge-wise, it is important to align an HR department according to the top management philosophy. In fact, you can find the best books online as well for guidance, but there is one book called "HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT" by C.B. GUPTA. This book is suggested even for people specializing in HRM in MBA. It is thorough and simple enough to follow.

All the best in your endeavors.
