Navigating Career Choices: Should I Transition from HR Generalist to Recruitment?

Hi to all my colleagues and seniors, I have 1.5 years of experience in an HR Generalist profile, but after a 1-year gap from my job, I am only receiving job offers in recruitment. This is because in the area where I am searching for a job, there are mainly opportunities in recruitment.

Career Transition Decision

Please suggest to me, is it a good decision for me to transition into recruitment? Additionally, which one would be better for me - BPO recruitment or IT recruitment?

Emphasize more on your area of interest. You should focus on mass hiring when it comes to BPO, so you might find it monotonous after a certain period of time. If you understand IT skills, IT recruitment will be a cakewalk for you. Recruitment itself is an ocean. If you love the job, you will reap rewards.

If you have done it before and you are comfortable with number chasing with unexpected last-minute dropouts, then you can opt for BPO hiring. Although last-minute dropouts can occur in any industry, I have seen them happen a little more frequently in BPO/Insurance compared to other industries. I am not sure what kind of hiring you will do in IT, but as a personal opinion, I think it would be better to go for IT hiring.

Thanks, Rajesh and Prashant, for your suggestions. Actually, my interest is mainly in a generalist profile. But as I said earlier, there is an opportunity in recruitment only. So, I want to know one thing: after working in recruitment, will it be easy to get a job again in a generalist profile?

You can pick up a recruitment job for the time being and keep scouting for a Generalist role. The earlier you get it, the better it would be, even though you will be in HR only when working in recruitment. One aspect which is advantageous to you is that you have already worked in an HR Generalist role for a decent 1.5 years, which will help you in getting an HR Generalist role even after 1-1.5 years or a little more of pure recruitment experience as your basics for Generalist HR will be clear. But as I said, see if you can get into a Generalist HR role as quickly as possible.

Hi Ishitha, if you couldn't secure a generalist role, you can try out for a job that includes a part of the generalist role, such as a payroll executive or admin-related work. I don't think you will find it tough to find such jobs. You can explore opportunities where you will come across administrative roles in consultancies as well, so you can opt for them rather than getting into recruitment.
