Navigating Challenges with HR Manager and Work Assignment for Career Development

I need advice from the HR team. I completed my MBA in 2009, and now I have been working as an HR Executive for the past six months. The issue is that my HR Manager is not assigning any work to me. Every day, I come to the office but do not have any tasks to do. I am not satisfied with my job. I have asked him numerous times, and he keeps saying he will assign me work, but I have yet to receive any tasks. I am unsure whom I should report this situation to. Please advise me, and thank you.

One thing to keep in mind is that responsibility does not come automatically. You have to prove that you are able to take responsibility. Your education is not as important as work experience, so don't be egotistic just because you have an MBA.

How can I prove myself? Many times, I try to support and do things, but he does not acknowledge me. Day by day, he continues the same behavior. My colleagues have mentioned to me that in the past, he did not give any responsibilities to previous employees, nor did he provide opportunities for new employees to learn, resulting in them leaving their jobs. However, I am unable to change my job because my total experience is 1.6 years, which is the main reason. Can you please guide me on what to do? Is there any mistake on my part? Well I agree with Mr. Vineet that you need to put your more effort to get your seniors/superiors convince in this regards, you have to gain their trust and do continue asking for work by showing your interest in work. It is you who have to learn things as you are a new cog in this environment and HR world. Certainly they will assign you work and they are paying you for the same. No employer wants to keep their employees free and hire the peoples to get their work done.

But as you are a new and fresher and have not much experience, perhaps, they are taking time and assigning you least work bcz of this. Also it is not possible that an employee has no work to do, and Employer will never realize it. No Employer can bear this but can say an employee have not much work to do that will make someone feel as “free all the day” but will shortly be assigned.

You need to have patience, stability and need to show your interest to them. Show them that you are always ready to learn and do any work whatever they will assign you without expecting or complaining that you have nothing to do or doing something which you don’t deserve or unsatisfactory etc etc.

Second, you need to wait here for more sometime, later you can look for a change and until then you need to learn many things which also you can learn by this place. There is everything whatever you required to learn.

You can start with “My 7 Stars of HR” which is a concept of HR and function laid down by me and by updating and reading the threads/posts and practical at your own.

For example:

-If you wanna know everything about EPF & ESIC, you can read the threads/discussion held by the members here and can keep update yourself with the rules/ rate of deduction / returns and other required forms and everything.

-If you wanna know about Salary Structure, Calculation and other elements of Salary, you can get the same by doing the same procedure as I said above for EPF & ESIC and also need to go for Compensation Act 1923 and Bonus, Gratuity and so on, you can get the sample sheets/ Salary slip and calculation/ Attendance register and many more…

Now you have an idea what to do and where to go and how…

One more thing what I used to say always to the peoples like you and others i.e. IF YOU WANNA LEARN ANYTHING IN THIS WORLD, YOU DON’T NEED TO FIND A TEACHER FOR THIS, THE TEACHER WILL FIND YOU HIM/HERSELF.

First, the advantage is you are an MBA person. Secondly, practical knowledge is less, but you are not a fresher. Furthermore, if you concentrate on employees and employers, then work will come your way automatically. There will be no chance for you to be idle, and whatever is happening will be seen by your boss. One day, he will call you smart, passionate, hardworking, and intelligent. However, to reach that point, you have to fight and never lose yourself.

I have no words for that, but I just say "Chak de" means fight, fight, and fight.

I would like to draw your kind attention to just focus on your work, because through your entire posts, I can see that there are a lot of spelling mistakes. It is not your fault but rather a human nature tendency that when we work, due to enthusiasm or any other reason, we don't review our work. It is a bad habit that should be cultivated. Just after completing your work, ask yourself, "Is it right?" After a brief review of your work, you will find the answer yourself. So whatever you do in your life, ask yourself, "Is it right?"

My sincere advice is to start interacting with other members in your team and understand their activities. Learn how the system runs first. For HR, it is important to understand the company's business and the system operations. Put your efforts into understanding the activities of other team members and how they accomplish them. This is what I did in the early days of my career by engaging with experienced employees and learning about all HR activities in a company and the best way to execute them. Therefore, begin communicating with your seniors in the team.

I initially agree with you that this type of attitude from your boss is always wrong. Even though you are relatively new, you should always be given miscellaneous or supportive tasks to do. The important thing is that you can only prove yourself when you are given things to do.

So, please wait patiently for some more time, or else start searching for another opportunity.

I thank you for your contribution in clarifying Ammaji on her problem. But I do wish to remind you that unless an opportunity is given, there is no scope for learning and success. In her case, what I feel is her manager might be a person who does not have the tendency to teach and assign work so that the newcomers will learn things and start implementing. I always suggest that even though we might be experienced in our own field, there is always something to learn from the new generation. They always create situations for us to learn the advanced technologies or concepts that will ease up our routine.

Ammaji, in your case, I would recommend having a clear discussion with your manager and making necessary decisions because time is precious, and you cannot afford to lose it always looking for a helping hand. All the best.

I would like to tell you that your boss will not give you any chance to prove your skills. It's better you start searching for a new job. Don't waste your time by keep on waiting.

Well said, Anil. Nowadays, this is a common problem with all starters. They come in with a lot of expectations, and when they are not allowed to participate in common operations, they feel low, and some even look for a change.

Guys, I would suggest all to prepare a manual of all the operational processes and rephrase it on your own to check whether that can make any changes to the existing one. Act closely with all your seniors to learn more about the methodology of the inherited process.

Regarding my problem, I previously worked as a recruiter in an outsourcing firm. After that, I got a job in FMCG as an HR Executive. At that time, I felt very happy because I needed to learn new things. However, I didn't have proper guidance to learn that until now.

Many times, I asked for guidance, and recently, he outlined my roles and responsibilities:

- Updating the attendance
- PMS
- Manpower data
- Capability
- Variable pay
- Recruitment
- ESI, PF
- HRIS updating

Apart from recruitment, I don't have any knowledge. He said he would provide training, but until now, there has been no training. Without training and knowledge, how can I prove myself? I am currently only involved in recruitment. How can I learn these things?
