Bridging the Gap: HRM Theory vs Practice and the Importance of Training

Dilum66
Dear friends,

I need to know what the gap is between HRM we learn in classrooms and the actual practice of HRM in organizations. If anyone knows, please reply soon.

Thank you.

Hi Dilum,

Whatever you learn theoretically in your classroom is someone's practical view that guides you to understand about HRM. However, practically, someone who can train you on that basis or provide you with an opportunity to work on it gives more knowledge about it. It's not a one-word answer where you can understand or know about it... You need training for that, where corporate people can train you in that aspect if you are in a HR role in a firm. There are no such gaps between what you learned in class and what is practiced in an organization.

In classrooms, we get to know the theoretical knowledge about the various domains, whereas in practicality, when you get industrial exposure, you understand the finest details involved in various functions of HR. In classrooms, we learn that things take place in a particular manner, but when you actually do it, you realize that there are a lot more things which are not written in any of the books. However, there are no major gaps.

So Mahesh, you have a special interest in HR management. I wanted to know whether it's a one-year diploma course in HRM or if it is something related to your undergraduate degree. It depends on that; I can give you certain ideas or tips about the HRM segment.

Well, it's good to know before you go for practice. Let me inform you that whatever we learn as a theory of HRM and actual practice in the organization always has a little difference.

The difference lies in the fact that all things carried out in an industrial organization are entirely as per the rules, regulations, policies, and procedures of that particular organization. Our theoretical knowledge is as essential as electricity is needed to run a computer.

Thus, our learning in colleges serves as a supportive function to understand and implement those policies and procedures. All the best for your future.
