Career Choices: Is It Better to Be a Big Fish in a Small Pond or a Small Fish in the Ocean?

Who do you think is better placed in today's competitive world? What do you think is better: being a big fish in a small pond or a small fish in the ocean? In other words, is it better to work for a smaller organization at a higher post, or should one stick to a large branded organization and become a small fry?

Have you heard about the expression "better to reign in Hell than serve in Heaven"? If yes, then let me say that it's true since ages and will hold true for generations to come.

People work for large organizations, gain experience, and when they hit the glass ceiling or are not aggressive enough to move vertically, they opt to join smaller organizations at a higher rank or position. After a period of time, they can again jump to some larger organization at an even higher position, and this cycle continues. This happens all the time and everywhere.

I'm pursuing MBA and according to my perception, it's better to go for a high-profile position rather than an organization. In a small organization, you will be given more responsibilities because there are fewer people to handle the work. This provides more opportunities to learn and can open doors to bigger organizations. On the other hand, in a big organization, there are many people to do the work, and sometimes you may not have tasks or responsibilities. This can lead to job dissatisfaction and frustration. Even people from IIM prefer a good profile. This is my perception based on insights from established individuals in various fields. Furthermore, big organizations look for experienced individuals and a solid profile, which can be developed in smaller organizations. I believe everyone can succeed in a big organization eventually.
