Job Change Interview Question: How Do You Explain Your Reason for Leaving?

When somebody goes for an interview, what exactly does he/she need to say when asked, "Why are you changing your present job?" :unsure:

You can cite several reasons, such as wanting to engage in more automated procedures or seeking the latest technology upgrades, which software professionals often mention. Another reason could be the desire for a more lucrative package or for relocation based on location preference. Additionally, you may have encountered issues in your previous company, such as problems with peer relationships, your reporting person, or the company's policies and procedures, that have led you to seek a change. There could be several reasons why you did not enjoy your experience at your former company, but it is important never to speak negatively about your previous employer.

There are so many things that can be considered at that time, such as:
- Seeking better opportunities
- Advancing in your career
- Exploring relocation options
- Adding more feathers to your cap

However, it is important never to speak ill of your old company. Avoid mentioning that you don't have a good relationship with your juniors as well.

Though I personally feel that one must give the actual reason why he/she would like to change jobs rather than giving made-up answers...

But, I think you can try something like - you think you have learned quite a lot in this job, and you think now it's time to explore more areas of HR, something like that, you know.

There are so many reasons to leave a company. First, decide what your main intention is for leaving the present company. List down the reasons for leaving before attending the interview. As our friends have mentioned, there are several reasons, such as your pay, career growth, flexibility, technology changes, or any personal problems you may be facing. However, do not get confused while answering in front of the interviewer, as it may cause the other person to not believe your words.

Make sure that the reasons you provide are generic and realistic. All the best.

Stay positive regardless of the circumstances. Never refer to a major problem with management, and never speak ill of supervisors, co-workers, or the organization. Doing so will reflect poorly on you. Keep smiling and talk about leaving for a positive reason, such as an opportunity, a chance to do something special, or other forward-looking reasons.
