Organization Development is an effort planned, organization-wide, and managed from the top to increase organization effectiveness and health through planned interventions in the organization's 'processes,' using behavioral-science knowledge. According to the definition, OD is mainly used for developing an organization. OD is a vast subject; it also includes change management. Here, applying behavioral sciences means applying various OD interventions to bring about effective change in an organization. OD is a long-range effort to improve an organization's problem-solving and renewal processes and also to implement effective change in an organization. Hope you have got your answer.

Organization development as a whole is a continuous process that is mainly required for each and every organization to improve itself. It is a process of defining issues and determining a suitable course of action. The process is carefully planned and implemented to benefit the organization, its employees, and its stakeholders.

Importance of Organizational Development

Profitability, productivity, morale, and quality of work life are of concern to most organizations because they impact the achievement of organizational goals. There is an increasing trend to maximize an organization's investment in its employees. Jobs that previously required physical dexterity now require more mental effort. Organizations need to "work smarter" and apply creative ideas. The effective organization must be able to meet today's and tomorrow's challenges. Adaptability and responsiveness are essential to survive and thrive. So, OD is an important process for organizations to meet their goals.

As per OD Network, the following are the answers to your questions:

What is OD?

Organization Development (OD) is the process of improving organizations. The process is carefully planned and implemented to benefit the organization, its employees, and its stakeholders. The client organization may be an entire company, public agency, non-profit organization, volunteer group, or a smaller part of a larger organization. The change process supports the improvement of the organization or group as a whole. The client and consultant work together to gather data, define issues, and determine a suitable course of action. The organization is assessed to create an understanding of the current situation and to identify opportunities for change that will meet business objectives.

Why is OD?

Profitability, productivity, morale, and quality of work life are of concern to most organizations because they impact the achievement of organizational goals. There is an increasing trend to maximize an organization's investment in its employees. Jobs that previously required physical dexterity now require more mental effort. Organizations need to "work smarter" and apply creative ideas. The workforce has also changed. Employees expect more from a day's work than simply a day's pay. They want challenge, recognition, a sense of accomplishment, worthwhile tasks, and meaningful relationships with their managers and co-workers. When these needs are not met, performance declines. Today's customers demand continually improving quality, rapid product or service delivery, fast turnaround time on changes, competitive pricing, and other features that are best achieved in complex environments by innovative organizational practices. The effective organization must be able to meet today's and tomorrow's challenges. Adaptability and responsiveness are essential to survive and thrive.

It is very general and important for every organization to have OD because it shows how your organization grows and what other things are missing that the organization has to implement. It also shows the hierarchy of your organization. You need to prepare the organization chart to fill the gap.

The Importance of Organizational Development (OD)

OD is an important tool to improve the efficacy of an organization. It involves constantly monitoring performance and diagnosing strengths and weaknesses to enhance strengths and eliminate weaknesses, ensuring the organization performs better than ever. This process is conducted by an OD expert or interventionist, in cooperation with management, to help the organization muster the strength to scale new heights in productivity and performance, staying ahead of competitors.

When performance is poor in any or many fields, OD intervention is sought. It is carried out with the expertise of professionals in various fields, such as Prof. B. Venkateswaran from Rai Business School, Chennai.
