Feeling Overwhelmed by New Training Role at a Hotel? Seeking Advice to Boost Confidence and Skills

I am working for a manufacturing company. My boss also owns a star hotel and has asked me to handle the training and development activities for his hotel. I have facilitated many training programs for my previous employer, but I have never undergone any formal training myself. I have experience in preparing training calendars, facilitating training sessions, and collecting training feedback. However, I have never been the one giving the training.

I have always been interested in training, but now I am not confident enough to take on that responsibility. I have expressed my concerns to my boss, but he believes I can do a good job. I am feeling very confused.

Please suggest how I can improve my training skills and gain more confidence in this area.

It is good to see that your boss has shown faith in your ability to train people. We should try to understand that only practice and experience make people near perfect. So what I suggest is, first, you have to start believing in yourself and have self-confidence that you can train people.

The next thing to do is preparation. Good preparation for the training will make you even more confident to complete the training successfully. If you can get a few videos of some good trainers in action, it will be very helpful as you can gather some information from that. You should be 100% sure about your preparation to succeed.

Steps to Enhance Your Training Skills

If your boss wants you to handle the training, then you should check if you have the following, and if not, then get it done:

1. Select a few topics related to soft skills and a few related to hospitality.
2. Read and research these topics.
3. Attend training sessions and get certified.
4. Conduct small groups among friends, families, and in hospitality colleges; this would give you confidence.
5. Attend the train-the-trainer program.
6. Use correct and positive body language effectively.
7. Make sure you have a good dose of "Sense of Humour."

When I was in Delhi, India, I had the opportunity to train one of the best hospitality college's final-year students and also the staff of a newly opened 5-star property. I have been in training for the last 11 years.
