Employee engagement is a huge task. For your assignment, if you can get your hands on Gallup Q12, it will be good. These days, we have a visiting team from Gallup in our organization, and I am one of the trainers for them. Employee engagement can be ascertained by classifying employees into three categories:
1. Highly engaged
2. Engaged
3. Disengaged

You can find their definitions in the Gallup report; it's a fantastic report. I have a presentation on employee engagement; see if it helps you.
