Hi everyone, good morning. I want to know the history of HRM. Why did HRM come about? Before HRM, what was happening in organizations?

I don't know the exact history of how HRM originated, but I do have some knowledge about it. The top management of the organization believed that people are also assets to the organization. Therefore, they decided to appoint a person to maintain and understand the challenges faced by the employees. This appointed person is a Human Resource Manager (HRM).

Before HRM

Before HRM was established, there was HRM in some form, but it was not developed in a functional way. For example, training was provided by any head who knew about it, salaries were given by the owner, and so on. However, as companies grew, the importance of these aspects increased. Therefore, every company needed a department to take care of and manage employees.

Evolution of HRM

Previously, it was called the personnel department, which took care of the day-to-day activities of all employees. Prior to that, it could have been referred to as the section department, where each section had an officer called a section officer who took care of this.

The Evolution of HRM

Before HRM, Personnel Management (PM) dealt with employees in the organization. However, when human beings were considered as a resource—most important among other resources, sensitive, and naturally possessing human rights and a life full of dignity—the new concept of HRM emerged. HRM is a department responsible for managing everything regarding human resources working in a particular organization. One thing I also came to know is that HRM Day is celebrated on August 11th every year.
