New HR in a Small IT Company: How Can I Implement Effective HR Practices?

soniya bajaj
Hello to all,

I am Soniya. I am newly working in an IT company. Before I joined the company, there was no HR department here. The problem here is such that as a fresher, I have put my best effort into dealing with all HR and admin departments. However, the company is good and growing, but it is small with only 12 people working. I am trying to implement all HR activities starting from recruitment. However, some HR practices cannot be applied here because the department head handles many things such as training. I have read all relevant material on HR activities and policies.

How Can I Tackle This Situation?

I love my HR work, but I'm finding it challenging. I feel a bit disappointed. Please help me with this problem. I need advice and guidance which I can only get from experienced individuals like you.

Regards,
Soniya

It is not such a big issue. I know that since you are a fresher brimming with ideas and have joined a small-sized company, you feel you want to implement new things and learn more practical HR. Since the size of the company is small, the first thing you can do is to draft policies for employees. You can look at drafting policies for leave, attendance, salary payment, travel, accommodation, and employee benefits that are currently in force.

As a next step, you can look at implementing an appraisal system for the employees. This can be a simple format, with the measurement of goals and rewards. Further, you can look at implementing a policy for the employee life cycle, i.e., recruitment, joining formalities, orientation, transfer, and separation.

Do understand that much of what we learn in our business schools may not be practical to implement, as it varies with the industry, size of employees, city, culture of the organization, etc. Much can be gained from looking at best practices in other companies and brushing up your knowledge. Even if we try, we cannot change the world overnight.

In management parlance, try to pick the low-hanging fruits and then look at newer ideas and implementations. All the best.

Hello sir, thank you so much for your reply and your guidance. You have provided me with such good information. However, I have one more question. I have already made a policy for the company and am working on performance appraisal. The issue is that sometimes I feel my policy is not working. For example, I planned to provide a particular kind of training to employees, but it is already given by the Team Head. What can I do in this situation? I want to implement HR activities that positively change the organization and contribute to the company's success.

Performance Appraisal and Policy Implementation

Hello sir, I have already made a policy for the company, and I am working on performance appraisal. However, sometimes I feel that my policy is not working. For instance, I have planned to provide a specific kind of training to employees, but it has already been conducted by the Team Head. In such cases, what can I do? I want to implement HR activities that positively impact the organization and contribute to the company's success.

Is the training the only aspect you feel has already been addressed? It would be best to consult with senior management to understand what actions have been taken so far. Based on this information, you can adjust the policy or determine the next steps accordingly.

The key to the success of any policy or change lies in assessing what practices are effective within the organization and implementing them accordingly. Involving key stakeholders such as management, department heads, and employees in major policy decisions or process changes will consistently yield positive outcomes.

Good morning, yes, sir, I am currently undergoing training related to the work, and I am a little bit confused about the type of training I should provide to the employees. Sir, I truly appreciate your support. Thank you for that.

Quality Complaints from Clients

I have another question for you, sir. Recently, my boss informed me that there have been quality complaints from clients regarding our company. In this regard, what steps should I take?

Thanks & Regards,
