Navigating Salary Slip Issues and Employment Documentation Concerns

Respected Sir,

I have been working in a transport company for the last 3 years, and I am receiving a consolidated salary of 28000 per month without any deductions and without being provided with a salary slip. My PF contributions are also being submitted based on a salary of 2500 per month only. Now, I am considering joining another company where I will be required to provide a payslip. Please advise me on what I should do or how I should address this issue when asked by the interviewer. I would be grateful for your prompt response.

You haven't mentioned the 'mode of salary payment' - whether through cash, cheque, or direct bank account deposit. Also, please confirm if you have an Appointment/Offer Letter - and if yes, what salary does it mention?

Next, you mentioned that you have been working here for 3 years - do you have any Appraisal/Annual Review Letters? If yes, what do they mention regarding the salary?

I do have an appointment letter where only Rs. 7500 was written as my salary. However, after my promotion, my salary increased to Rs. 28000, but this update was not reflected anywhere in the letter. Additionally, I have been receiving my payment in cash. Apart from the appointment letter, I do not have any other documents to present to the interviewer.

Frankly, it's a tough call for you. I suggest speaking the truth at the interview and leaving the decision to them, and of course, him. If they believe you, well and good. Quite a few HR people can see through if someone is speaking the truth or bluffing about such aspects. You can also highlight your core competencies and ask for a salary commensurate with your strengths, not just based on your present salary — another way of handling the issue. If none of the above works, then you will have to make a tough decision for the next interview — to state the figure as per records.

However, I think you should have thought about this aspect much earlier since cash payments for the salary you get aren't usually a clean deal (being a transport company, I can understand the reasons). Please take all such aspects into consideration when you join the next job. Many often don't give such aspects serious thought when joining and only realize much later when it could be too late.
