Insights on HR Interview Preparation and Choosing HR as a Career

Hello everyone,

If you are attending an HR interview at a company and the interviewer asks you, "Why have you chosen HR as your specialization?" what reply will you give? I need suggestions :)

Hi Preethi,

As an HR professional, it is expected that you possess certain competencies. You should be enthusiastic, empathetic, a good listener, adept at making judgments, a quick learner, a people person, positive, and patient.

One crucial aspect to remember is honesty during interviews. Only mention these qualities if you genuinely possess them as interviewers can discern authenticity.

To self-evaluate, reflect on your character and attitude before responding to queries. Consider writing an essay about yourself to identify your strengths, areas for improvement, and qualities appreciated by friends.

Upon reviewing your self-analysis, determine your character and recall instances where you displayed these traits. If they align, confidently discuss them in the interview.

I hope this clarifies your query.

Hi Preethi,

Here is one more point to add to the previous email. When you are asked why you chose HR as your area, to make your answer satisfactory for the interviewer, you can explain that your traits and persona align well with the HR field. To emphasize this point, you can provide examples of the traits mentioned in my previous email.

I apologize for sending two separate emails and for any confusion and inconvenience caused to the readers.

Hi, I think for these kinds of questions, people have to do self-analysis, write it on paper, and try to refresh it until it looks better. Because these questions are asked to assess your personal level, I believe it must depend on the individual. Only then do I think it will have the desired impact. Ok, see you. Best of luck for the interview. Have a nice time.

Hi Preethi,

I saw your mail! This is a very good question that you have asked. Let us say the interviewer has asked you this (in fact, I have been asked this a couple of times!) then the reply can be or what I replied was: I have an interest in this field, I like interacting with people, I like meeting different people, and analyzing their behavior. The HR field is of utmost importance to me as this makes me the link between the management and the employees.

Let me tell you about an amusing incident when I was being interviewed: After the mandatory questions were over, the interviewer just dropped a bomb on me by saying, "I would like to see your interviewing skills, so interview me assuming that I am the candidate and you are the HR Manager." Well! I just about did that and walked out with a funny feeling that I was the one interviewing and not vice versa.

Hence, analyze yourself first as to what is it that you like in the field of HR:

a. Do you like meeting people?
b. Do you like maintaining all records of employees?
c. Do you like interviewing people?
d. Do you like interacting with the top management of the organization?
e. Do you like to work with a deadline to fill up vacancies?

These are just a few questions that you should be asking yourself. Just try it, and I am sure you will get the answer. This is a very vast field, and the more you learn, the more you gain.

Regards,

Sadashiv :)
