He met her at a party. She was so outstanding, with many guys chasing after her, while he was so normal that nobody paid attention to him. At the end of the party, he invited her to have coffee with him. She was surprised but, due to being polite, she promised.

They sat in a nice coffee shop. He was too nervous to say anything, and she felt uncomfortable, thinking, "Please, let me go home." Suddenly, he asked the waiter, "Would you please give me some salt? I'd like to put it in my coffee."

Everybody stared at him, finding it strange. His face turned red, but he still put the salt in his coffee and drank it. Curiously, she asked him, "Why do you have this hobby?" He replied, "When I was a little boy, I lived near the sea. I liked playing in the sea, and I could taste the salt, just like the taste of salty coffee. Every time I have salty coffee, I think of my childhood and my hometown. I miss my hometown and my parents who still live there." Tears filled his eyes as he spoke. She was deeply touched.

That was his true feeling, from the bottom of his heart. A man who can express his homesickness must be someone who loves home, cares about home, and has a sense of responsibility for home. She then started to speak about her faraway hometown, her childhood, and her family. It was a really nice conversation and a beautiful beginning of their story. They continued to date, and she realized that he was a man who met all her demands. He was tolerant, kind-hearted, warm, and caring. He was a good person, and she almost missed him. Thanks to his salty coffee!

Their story unfolded like every beautiful love story. The princess married the prince, and they lived a happy life together. Every time she made coffee for him, she put some salt in it, knowing that's how he liked it.

After 40 years, he passed away, leaving her a letter that said, "My dearest, please forgive me for my life's lie. The only lie I told you was about the salty coffee. Remember our first date? I was so nervous and actually wanted sugar, but I asked for salt. It was hard for me to change, so I continued with it. I never imagined it would be the start of our communication.

I attempted to tell you the truth many times in my life, but I was too afraid. I promised not to lie to you about anything. Now, facing death, I am not afraid, so I confess: I never liked the salty coffee; it tasted strange and bad. Yet, I drank it my whole life. Since I met you, I have no regrets for anything I did for you. Having you with me was my greatest happiness. If I could live again, I would still want to know you and have you in my life, even if it meant drinking salty coffee again."

Her tears soaked the letter completely.

One day, someone asked her, "What does salty coffee taste like?"

"It's sweet," she replied, tears in her eyes.

Hi Anu,

Real nice story... My own experience tells me that it is very easy to miss that special person. One should always try to tell one's feelings as soon as possible, because life has its own plan; it won't wait until you gather the courage!

Cheers,
Pallavi

That's very true, Pallavi. The moment we realize such a special person, we may find ourselves far away from them or they may not be with us. People have said it right; we often fail to recognize the importance of things that are near us. We typically realize their value only when they are no longer with us.
