Crafting a Leave Policy: What Essentials Should I Include for a Flat 16-Day Leave?

Aruna Sriram
Hi Everyone,

I am a new entrant. I browsed through and found all the topics interesting and very much useful. I am happy to be a part of the group now. I am working as an HR Executive for a company in Bangalore. I have to frame a good leave policy. The company wants to give a flat 16 days leave without categorizing it. I would like to know everything about a leave policy and what are the mandatory facts which I need to adhere to while framing the policy.

Thanks and regards,
Aruna

The following are the mandatory leaves:

1. Republic Day
2. May Day
3. Independence Day
4. Gandhi Jayanti
+ 6 important festival days of your state.

Apart from the above, we have the following:

1. EL - Earned Leave - 15 days
2. SL - Sick leave - 6 days
3. WL - Wedding leave - 3 days
4. ML - Maternity leave - As per the act
5. PL - Paternity leave - 3 days
6. AL - Adoption leave - 2 weeks
7. BL - Bereavement leave - 3 days
8. SPL - Special day leave - 1 day

Also, you can check your government leave calendar. Trust the above will help you.

Hi Dasa,

Thank you so much for your reply. Your information was very helpful. However, I need some more information about the framing of leave policies. As I had mentioned, my company is not interested in categorizing the leaves. Can you shed some more light on this?

Thanks,
Aruna

Apart from the statutory holidays, you can designate all other types of leaves as casual leave. However, as an HR professional, try to persuade your management and explain the benefits of having various types of leave.

Apart from the statutory holidays, you can name all the leaves as casual leave. But as an HR professional, try to convince your management and explain the benefits of having different types of leave.

Do we have rule that Notice period should be deducted @ of basic only or it can vary from company to company
As we are redoing the company policies can we work out Notice period on gross looking at a high rate of attrition in BPO's
Is it possible or we have stander/fix law to have notice period deducted @ of basic only

Aruna,

It differs from company to company. Some companies ask for one month basic, some for Gross. It all depends upon the industry you work for.

Hi,

I need urgent help. If a person is on leave, will W/OFFs be counted as leave or W/OFFs? Since leave is for more than the specified time, it will be leave without pay. What will be the status of W/OFFs - will it be marked as absent or LWP?
