Leaves - if a person takes leave on Saturday will it be considered half-day leave or full day leave?

pvj
Since we work a half-day on Saturday, if a person takes leave on Saturday, will it be considered a half-day leave or a full-day leave?
pon1965
Is it not a hypothetical query?

Saturday - a half working day is counted as one working day. If a person takes leave on Saturday, they will lose one working day. Is it not? Now, decide.

In my opinion, it should be a half-day off, and not a full day. However, it depends on the company policy.

As we are considering either 30 or 31 calendar days as our working days, we have to count Saturday (even if it is a half working day) as one working day.

Hi,

The company will pay full salary for a half-day; then, it will be considered as a full-day leave. Is it clear?

As decided by the company policy, if Saturday is a half-day, then that leave should be treated as a full day, not a half-day.

Hi,

You can first refer to your HR manual policy regarding salary deduction on half-day Saturday working. However, in general HR terms, the salary will be deducted for the full day.

Hi,

Every employee needs to work for 48 hours a week. Please confirm your shift timings from Monday to Friday. If an employee works only 40 hours at 8 hours per day, then Saturday would be a full-day leave. If an employee has already put in 44 hours from Monday to Friday, then Saturday can be considered as a half-day.

Murali

Thank you, everybody, for the reasoning given by all of you. Let me assure you that this is not hypothetical; last week, one of the employees raised this question.

I am of the view that since we pay a full day's salary for Saturday, it should be considered as a full day's leave.
varun_agerwal
It depends on the company's leave policy. As per my company's leave policy, a full-day leave will be counted, as the company pays full-day salary for Saturday.

We count as half day, depending on the payroll calculation and C&B policies.

This actually depends on the leave policy of the company. You should refer to your policy to obtain clarifications. The legal stand is that an employee/workman is allowed to work for 48 hours a week, and the 7th day should be off. They should not work for more than 9 hours a day. A day means 24 hours.

If we are paying him/her full-day salary for half-day Saturday work, it should be counted as a full day's leave.

As half-day working is a benefit provided to the employees who work for the entire six days, an employee who is on leave on Saturday will not be working for the entire six days. Hence, the leave sanctioned would be for a full day. Another instance is that working for half a day entitles an employee to earn a full day's salary. Therefore, if he/she wishes to be on leave, he/she will have to reimburse it with a full day's leave. Hope you got the answer.

It depends on how many hours a person worked on Saturday. If he worked 4 hours out of a total of 9 hours/8 hours job, then it will be considered as a half day, not a full day. Alternatively, if he worked 2/9 hours, then you can mark him for a full day leave and adjust his 2 hours further in for a half day leave. Please check your company policies.

Thank you.

Dear,

The leave policy itself indicates that if a person is absent on a working day, whether it is a half-day or a full day, it doesn't matter. If a person does not attend duty, it is considered a full-day leave.
Mallikharjun
As someone said, the question is really hypothetical. When it comes to salary, you want to consider it as a full day, and when it comes to leave, how can you ask for half a day? It's 100% a full day. If you have any ERP implementation, then it may consider it as a half day.

Dear,

It will be considered as a full day, which means a full day salary deduction if you are going on leave. In case you wish to work for the full day and want to claim for the same, then prior to this, you have to talk with your senior or respective HR. They will mark you for comp off if the company's HR policies permit to do so.

The total hours for a week will determine the status of a half-day or a full day. If he satisfies that, the half working day can be considered as half only.

It will be considered as one day of leave. Some companies work 9 hours a day, so they may adjust Saturday as a half day. It depends on the company policy and working hours.

Sure, it is counted as a full-day leave because for salary processing, we are considering it as a full day if he/she is present on that day.

Dear PVJ,

Kindly review your company's policy on working hours for Saturdays because it is a crucial part of your company's policy. First, discuss this matter with your senior management to ensure thorough understanding. Your company's policy states that Saturdays are considered full days, so any absence on a Saturday should be considered as a full-day leave, not half-day.

If you work on Saturday, you will receive full-day pay even if it is only a half-working day. Similarly, if you take leave, the salary will also be deducted for a full day.

Dear Pvj,

In my opinion, his/her full-day leave should be deducted. It should be counted as a full day only. The rest depends upon your company's HR policies.

The company is working half-day on Saturday, but if the company is paying a full-day salary/wages for such half-day working, then leave for that Saturday will attribute to a full-day leave and obviously not a half day.

Thank you.
CSLKOCHI
If he works on that day, he will be paid full-day wages. Obviously, if he does not work, he will not be eligible for full-day wage. If he wants to take leave, he should take a full-day leave.

I have 3 employees in the company and want to give Saturday half-day leave on a rotational basis. Any suggestions?
