HRIS - how it works? its functions? benefits? its need in the organization?

My heartiest Greeting to all, Can any one guide me to learn about Human Resource Information System, I am not only interested to know whats actually this system is? how it works? its functions? benefits? its need in the organization? Ive worked with many organizations with HRIS in operation. Its an interphase that eliminates paper work and maintaining filing and huge back ups manually.
There are many service providers who provide this service and you can browse through. Shawman Consultants is one of them.
You can connect it to measure attendance, maintain employee records, performance management, exit interview data and use it effectively to produce attrition, emp on board, various percentages to measure dept wise, manager wise reports.
