Dear Friends,
Sometimes it is difficult to define what discipline is, but you can recognize the signs of indiscipline. Whether in a new-age organization or an older one, discipline forms the backbone of any organized behavior in the institution. No organization, however progressive, can work effectively without proper behavior on the part of the employees. Discipline necessarily involves a state of mind in the person, be it in the family, society, or workplace.
Industrial Discipline
Industrial discipline is essential due to the interdependence of employees and management in the organization. Management takes the initiative in establishing discipline by formulating a set of rules, a code of conduct, or standards of employee performance.
Management's Right to Formulate Codes of Conduct
The law of the land also recognizes management's right to formulate proper and reasonable codes of conduct. Good HR practices can't and should not always be just about sweetness and pampering. It is good to keep people under discipline. Modern-age HR professionals dislike and consider irrelevant the words 'rule' and 'discipline.' They believe in treating their employees with hopes, desires, wants, needs, softness, and affiliation. But are such people not spoiling their employees beyond repair, all in the name of 'best HR practice'? When one maintains discipline in an institution, good objectives of fairness and humanitarianism among all will automatically follow.
Limitations of Internal Administration and Discipline
Despite having the power to direct its internal administration and discipline, it is not unlimited. The law of discipline is evolved by judicial decisions, principles of natural justice, and service rules/standing orders. This subject has gained much importance because it directly affects employee relations and the work environment. The cover feature of this issue is all about managing discipline with practical tips for direct applications.
