How Do I Calculate Accident Rates in Man-Hours for Better Workplace Safety?

jigyasa valbani
Dear All,

I am working as an HR professional with a manufacturing/fabrication unit with 200 employees. Since the probability of accidents occurring is high in manufacturing sectors, I need to calculate the accident rate in order to reduce it with respect to safety aspects.

Can someone guide me on the formula for "How to calculate the accident rate in man-hours?"

Kindly provide your suggestions.

Thanks,
Jigyasa Valbani

Dear Mr. Dilip,

I have some questions to ask regarding the formulas given by you. Should the number of man-hours worked be calculated per week, month, or year? Should the number of man-days lost be calculated for a single employee who met with an accident or for all the employees who met with an accident in a particular time span? The formula shows 10 to the power of 6, so is this the standard power?

Kindly provide your feedback to address my queries.

Thanks

Dear Mr. Jigyasa Valbani,

The number of man-hours worked has to be calculated per week, month, or year? = Month

The number of man-days lost has to be calculated for a single employee who met with an accident or for all employees who met with an accident in a particular time span? = For all the employees & man-days lost due to accidents in a particular month

The formula shows 10 to the power of 6, so is it the standard power? = Yes

Please let me know if you have any further queries.

Thank you.

Thank you so much for your timely feedback and suggestions. The calculation is now quite clear to me. (Kindly note that I am Ms. Jigyasa, not Mr. Jigyasa. I hope you won't mind considering that on your end.) Thanking you once again.

Please tell me why we should consider 10 to the power of 6 for calculating the frequency rate. Is there any specific reason for this?

Hello Mr. Dipil. Good Evening.

My name is Deshraj Singh Arya, a Safety Professional. Could you please provide information about the fatality rate? How do we calculate the fatality frequency rate if the number of fatal incidents is 01 and the total man-hours are 01 million?

Thanks & regards,
Deshraj Singh Arya
