Does Working for Big-Name Companies Really Boost Your CV in HR? Let's Discuss!

Today, I was just discussing with my senior that the name of the company with which you have worked or are working puts a great effect on your CV. He is DGM (Mktg). He said that yes, it does but more for marketing. For HR, it's not like that always, and it left me thinking. So, what do you say about this?

Yes, the present/past work experience and the company with which you are/were associated definitely have an impact on your CV, it may be positive or negative.

My views:

Marketing/Sales: Having been in industrial sales and project management, my opinion is that marketing/sales jobs are always industry-specific. By that, I mean that in most occasions, sales/marketing professionals move within a specific tech field where they have experience. For example, it would be pretty tough for someone who has been in the consumer goods market to transition into industrial selling. Therefore, since you are confined to a particular market, your past experience holds significant weight.

HR: HR, like Finance, is a generalist profession. Professionals in HR can transition across industry segments quite easily. Therefore, where you have worked may not carry as much weight. However, this does not imply it holds no importance at all. I believe, relatively speaking, its significance could be at a lower degree.

I really do not agree with it. I guess big names matter for all functional areas, but more importantly, what kind of responsibility you have undertaken in your job. Employers look for a thorough and crystal-clear understanding of the work done. As an MBA student in the final year, I have heard that big shots are more disorganized. What do you say about this?

Well, Bala, then you will not look for the company if you look for a job. And then why do employers prefer to hire candidates from big companies? Now, Gunjan, as you said big companies are more unorganized, then I must say yes. In fact, I have also seen in India many companies still don't realize the importance of an HR dept. What do you say?

Hi Dips,

I have still not experienced actual work life, but I had interviewed various HR professionals of big companies like Cognizant, PWC, and WIPRO during my summer internship. I guess companies are increasingly understanding the importance of HR functions to increase productivity. HR people are making them realize that they are now business partners. It's mainly some traditional companies that may be viewing HR as not important. In fact, Anil Ambani, in one of his meetings, said that his work is basically managing people.

Dear All,

One thing that is for sure is that, irrespective of function (whether marketing or HR), big brands do create a good impact on your CV. At least in the early stages of your career, it makes sense to be associated with a big name. The main reason here is that these organizations are supposed to have stringent screening processes along with reasonably good compensation packages. The question of functionality specification with respect to brand recognition does not arise here.

Some important points to note are that young graduates are prone to choosing established companies at whatever cost to secure a position in the corporate world. This is due to the perceived benefits such as the brand name, big project portfolio, corporate career growth, compensation, and position. However, in the digital economy, new startups have emerged and have surpassed established companies. Individuals are now more inclined to take less risk and opt for the easier route by choosing established companies. Nonetheless, in the long term, this may not always be beneficial for their careers.
