How Do You Handle Chatty Colleagues When You're Racing Against a Deadline?

Vaish
Hi everyone,

A small piece of information to share with all of you.

Though all of you know that listening skill is very important for any profession, we sometimes tend to ignore or rather do not give more importance to a person who talks.

What a good listener will do

- Think less about himself and more about the conversation.
- Adopt a relaxed stillness.
- Respond positively to initiatives other people make in a conversation.
- Be ready to deduce the important messages that are left unsaid.
- Make the right noises and avoid using too much of the six famous expressions.
- Use appropriate facial expressions.

Ethics in Listening

- Be a good listener.
- Use kind words.
- Avoid offensively dogmatic expressions.
- If you hear people mispronounce or misuse a word, don't humiliate them by pointing out their mistakes.
- Improve on vocabulary and use the right pronouns.
- Don't worry if you cannot find the right word.
- Avoid slang and don't use bombastic words to exhibit your vocabulary skills.
- Use simple English.

Don't be lost in conversations as well

- Don't let small talk become a "police tactical interrogation."
- Don't disclose too much of yourself too soon. It can make some people uncomfortable.
- Don't discuss controversial topics such as religion and politics.
- Don't make direct personal comments about a person's clothing, grooming, skin color, age, or accent.
- Don't show your limitations. Always equip yourself with a well-stocked mind.

Many times, in organizations, we come up with such a situation where someone would come and keep talking with us to while away their time, wherein you are really busy with your deadline. This, in turn, is actually making you unproductive. How do you tackle such a situation?

Cheers,

In such situations, it's crucial to set boundaries politely and assertively. Here are some practical steps to handle this effectively:

1. Politely Acknowledge: Acknowledge the person's presence and express that you are currently occupied with a deadline.
2. Set Time Limits: Politely mention that you have limited time to chat and need to focus on your work.
3. Suggest a Later Time: Offer to catch up at a more convenient time for a more detailed conversation.
4. Redirect the Conversation: Politely steer the conversation back to work-related matters or the reason for your busy schedule.
5. Express Appreciation: Thank the individual for understanding your situation and respecting your time constraints.
6. Stay Firm: If the person continues to linger, politely but firmly reiterate your need to focus on your tasks.

By setting clear boundaries and communicating assertively yet respectfully, you can manage such situations effectively without compromising your productivity.
