Feeling Stuck in My HR Role: Should I Stay or Discuss My Salary Concerns?

balachandar.ksr
Dear HR folks, I joined an IT company as an HR executive in September. I am currently being paid 5k per month. In the offer letter, they mentioned that after confirmation, I would be paid 10k per month. However, even though I have completed 6 months now, they are stating that "We have confirmed your position, but we will only pay you 5k for the next 3 months." They assured me that my salary would be increased during the appraisal.

I am concerned about my commitment period of 18 months. If I resign before completing this period, they will not provide me with a relieving letter. I am unsure about how to proceed in this situation. Should I resign and look for a new job, or should I discuss my concerns with the management?

Please advise me on the best course of action as I am feeling extremely frustrated.

Thank you for your help.

Wait for 3 more months as the company might want to appraise you along with all the employees, and their appraisal cycle will be after 3 months. Hence, they are asking you to wait. This is a common practice in many organizations, so don't worry.

Did they provide you with anything in writing regarding a salary increase after the completion of the probation period? If they did, then discuss it with the HR Manager and your supervisor.

Don't hastily plan to leave the job; you have a commitment period of 18 months, which could cause issues for you.

Stay calm, and in 3 months, it will all be settled.

Dear Archana, Yes, they have indicated that in the offer letter itself. After the successful completion of my probation period, my salary is fixed at 1.2 lakh per annum. The scenario is that they would like to confirm my position, but they haven't sent me an email for confirmation, and they are also negotiating the salary at this juncture. They discussed this only when I asked them about the status of my position. I can wait for 3 months; if they fix the salary at 10k by this appraisal, I will be paid 10k for the next 9 months. If I am given 10k now also, I will receive the same salary for the next year. I am just asking them why they are not paying me as they promised in the offer letter. This is the only question I have; I am not very keen on money. I am just asking them to stick to the words as they promised me in the offer letter. Your suggestion is valuable. I am still working in the company.

If that is the case, you should talk to the HR head or your boss and seek the answers. Talk to them openly and clearly ask whether they are going to increase your salary or not. There are chances that they might give you arrears for these 3 months, which is a practice in many companies. Send an email to the seniors about your confirmation letter and increment, both mentioning the clause as written in the offer letter. Let's see how it goes then.

Do share with us whatever happens next. 

I received an extension email from my senior HR. It's all part of the game, so I will only be receiving $5,000 per month for the next three months.

Please ask for an explanation on what basis an extension is given. You can speak to your manager or HR Manager and ask for feedback on your performance. Generally, with the extension of probation, a reason for such a step is also mentioned, be it your performance or any other area where the performance was not satisfactory. I would still suggest waiting for 3 months, and then changing your job if you don't get any letter of confirmation and increment.
