Lease and Rental Agreements in India
In India, lease/rental agreements for immovable properties are governed under certain Rent Control legislations, which are state-controlled; hence, they vary from state to state.
Lease agreements that are for 11 months or less are generally not required to be registered. Thus, people prefer this option to save the hassle of registration and the cost involved.
In many states, it is mandatory to register all lease/rental agreements irrespective of the duration. Therefore, it is advisable to check the local norms for the same.
Nevertheless, irrespective of the mandatory requirement, it is advisable to get the lease agreement registered as it would be helpful in avoiding disputes in the future.
