Feeling Shy Speaking English? Looking for Language Courses to Boost Confidence?

Hi, this is Sweety. Basically, I am a Telugu medium student. Although I am proficient in English, I hesitate to speak out. Please help me to overcome this feeling. Are there any correspondence courses available to learn languages like English, Tamil, and Kannada? I am very interested in pursuing such courses. I would recommend that you join a Toastmasters Club in your area. There are several of them in Hyderabad, and by attending meetings, you will have ample opportunities to develop communication, leadership, and other soft skills. You will be able to speak and network, which will help improve your English as you interact within the club. For learning other languages, you may need to attend classes, purchase books, or use self-study materials to gain a grasp of the language.

However, in this corporate sector, what I have learned is that we have to improve our soft skills, like communicating with others. We have to express our feelings confidently in any language, whether it be Telugu or even English.

You mentioned that you are proficient in English despite being a Telugu medium student. That's very commendable on your part. If you are fluent in English, please don't hesitate to speak in English. I believe there is no need for you to attend any coaching center, provided you have confidence and believe in yourself that you are good at English. I, too, am hesitant to speak in English; it's common in Andhra Pradesh. Here, we seldom use English in conversation, even though we study in English medium schools.

Hi, I am Vijay, also a Telugu medium student till my +2. Don't worry. Join the British Council for English. Go to the British Library and ask for classes on communication. Even in Ramakrishna Math, they provide coaching. Additionally, as somebody suggested, join the Toastmasters Club. Apart from all this, try to speak in English as much as you can. Watch English movies, news channels like CNN, BBC, Headlines Today, etc.

The success principle I followed is started communicating, even if I am wrong. Don't hesitate - it is not our mother tongue. Watching movies and talking to customer care people for various inquiries.

Thank you for your concern. I recently completed my MBA in HR and am presently working as an HR executive in Hyderabad. Many people suggested that I join RUSSELS, and I did so too. However, I failed to grasp the knowledge. I don't know if it's my fault or something else, but I have come to realize that institutions can only provide us with the necessary material and some guidance rather than practice. As a bachelor, it is not possible for me to watch English movies or BBC News because I do not have the facilities, except for reading newspapers. This has been improving my written language but not my spoken language.

What kind of practice do we need to improve our oral language?

So, try to speak English as much as you can without any hesitation. Believe me, within a few days, you can notice the difference. Please bear in mind to always do this with individuals who have an edge and not anyone below your competency. Reading English newspapers and listening to radio and TV shows would obviously help.

Start watching English movies. Take at least 5 words from the dictionary every day and learn their meanings. Try using these words in your conversations. Attend some spoken English classes. It will definitely help you improve your grammar.

No doubt, all these spoken English institutes help you to build good English. But as far as I understand, your concern is to talk English more fluently without making any mistakes or any hesitance, right?

If this is the case, then in addition to such classes, you should also start talking in English with all your close friends (if you are talking in Telugu with them). Try to speak slowly, meaning try to slow down the speed at which you talk. By doing this, you can correct your sentences in your mind, and by practicing this, you can start increasing the speed if you're comfortable enough.

If you intend to learn English quickly and effectively, you should be exposed to the language to the maximum extent. By keeping the company of friends who chat in English, watching English-based programs on TV, movies, etc.

Most importantly, try to think in English. This practice of thinking in English will most certainly give you quick and better results.

You can just start speaking only in English, setting aside your mother tongue or regional language, to pick up spoken English quickly.

Firstly, get the thought out of your mind that you cannot speak in English. When you start speaking your native language, do you think whether you can or not? It comes automatically. Similarly, when you speak English, don't let the thought come that you cannot speak. Also, start thinking in English and speak in English whenever you can. Look at yourself in the mirror and speak loudly to gain confidence. Read the newspaper aloud. Practice makes you perfect. There is no substitute for practice.
