Struggling with English Fluency in HR MBA? Seeking Tips and Activities to Improve!

Can anyone tell me how I can improve my fluency in English? Are there any activities for it as I'm doing an MBA in HR and how much is this required in this field? Help me out :(

Being adept in a new language is a multi-pronged effort:

a) Get a grammar book by "Wren & Martin." Costs approximately 200/-. Start with a single topic like a noun, read 1-2 pages each day, and seek to implement what you learn.

b) Pick a dictionary which contains "pronunciations" and also watch CNN.

c) Don't join any run-of-the-mill courses to learn English in 30/90 days. They will never work. If possible, Educational Counseling Services of the British Council has a multi-level course "English for Non-English Speaking Population" with British faculty, courseware, and an internationally valid certificate. Also, you will really learn things out there.

Hello Pooja,

As rightly suggested, buy a Wren and Martin book and start practicing the different usages of each verb form and tense. You should not only write and practice but also start reading aloud what you write so that you can use it in your day-to-day language. This way, you'll stop making mistakes. Try to do it for at least 45 minutes every morning. Also, buy a book on Word power and learn at least three new words each day to build your vocabulary. Start writing simple essays about topics you like to write about. This is another way to improve your writing skills.

You can watch NDTV where mostly you find people talking with a neutral accent who are Indians. Hope you find my inputs useful.

You just keep on studying newspapers like Hindu and Chronicle, and try to implement what you have learned. This will help you a lot in improving your language.

Read newspapers, especially The Hindu or The Times of India, with intonations. This will really build your English fluency within a few days.

As far as the matter of increasing fluency in English is involved, I believe it would be absolutely futile to join any courses such as personality development or English speaking courses. They only aim to make money and offer nothing in return.

I would suggest you to go through the newspaper every day. You can read TOI, MID DAY, or ET - anything that interests you. Comprehend the content you have read. Then, stand in front of the mirror and express what you have understood in English. This way, you can observe your facial expressions in the mirror, which will boost your confidence. Initially, you might find it challenging, but after practicing for five days, trust me, you will notice the difference. Make sure to practice this daily.

Another important aspect is to always converse in English with your friends, and if possible, with your siblings and parents. This will help you get into the habit of speaking confidently in English. Do not fear making mistakes in English; everyone makes them, and we learn from them. If people laugh when you make mistakes, let them laugh, as one day they will be the ones to praise you. If you know someone who speaks well, you can ask them about any sentences you have doubts about.

Give this method a month's time, follow the steps I have mentioned, and you will see amazing changes in your confidence, personality, and conversational skills.

As you hear, cultivate the habit of speaking the language correctly with the right pronunciations. Effective speaking practice comes from listening to those who speak the language well.

Develop the habit of reading good newspapers and magazines like TOI and India Today. Read them aloud, not just to yourself.

If you are already good in basic English grammatical usage and now want to improve your fluency, then I suggest listening to English programs on TV, observing people around you, watching the news, paying careful attention to them, and using the same can be a helpful tip for you. You can talk to yourself or to any of your friends who is good in English and can correct you. Besides this, always carry an English-to-English dictionary along with you. Also, try to learn from your friend or any other source how and where to use the word, the meaning of which you have just looked up.

And the most important advice - Be patient, things will take time to change. People have improved their English, including me, as a second language... so, don't get frustrated anytime. Best of luck! 😊

1. Listen - Consider a newborn baby who initially only listens. Intense listening is crucial, such as tuning into news channels or English rap songs with lyrics.

2. Speak - After listening, the baby starts to speak a few words taught by family members. Practice speaking English in front of a mirror for self-assessment.

3. Read - As speaking improves, reading becomes easier. Read your local English newspaper regularly.

4. Write - Eventually, the ability to write develops. Challenge yourself by writing on random topics given by friends or family members.

In summary, don't hesitate to learn English. Treat yourself like an infant in the learning process. Remember, your progress will come in due time.

For starters, you must believe and wish to speak fluent English, and you must have wished hard enough for it to come true. Once you wish for it, doors will open up to help the wishing fairy fulfill your wish.

To answer your query, you could:

1) Join an English speaking course.

2) Start continuously, constantly, and consistently talking in English to everyone around you.

3) Buy a dictionary to read and understand a new word every day/week and ensure that you use that new word at least thrice daily whenever possible. You could even talk to yourself in the mirror should the word be one that cannot be used in regular day-to-day conversation at home or at work. The dictionary also comes in handy should you not understand particular words you may come across during the course of your self-training.

4) Read English material that you like, e.g., newspapers, magazines, websites, technical material, etc.

5) Watch as many English movies as possible. Avoid English subtitled or dubbed movies as they may present an incorrect picture of the dialogue.

6) Attend free seminars of people talking in English, even if they are of no interest to you, just so that you may understand the language and the ways that it is spoken.

These are personal tips and not a guaranteed methodology, though I am sure if you do follow them, you should be able to achieve fluency in English as desired. However, discipline and determination to achieve despite all odds are the main ingredients to success!
