Delhi Government Hikes Minimum Wages by 15%

The Delhi government announced on Wednesday a 15% increase in the minimum monthly wages for skilled and unskilled laborers due to inflation. The minimum wages for semi-skilled workers have been increased from Rs. 225 per day to Rs. 259, which will raise their monthly salary from the existing Rs. 5,850 to Rs. 6,734. This decision was made at a cabinet meeting led by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit. The revised rates will be effective from February 1.

Relief for Low-Paid Workers

Announcing the revised wages, Labour Minister Ramakant Goswami stated: "The Delhi government is committed to providing relief to low-paid workers; hence, it has been decided to compensate workers with a hike in minimum wages due to inflation." He also mentioned that the government might announce another wage increase in April.

Revised Wages for Different Worker Categories

- The minimum wages for unskilled workers have been increased to Rs. 234 per day from Rs. 203 per day. As per the revised rates, unskilled workers will receive a monthly salary of Rs. 6,084 instead of Rs. 5,278.

- The minimum wages for semi-skilled workers have been increased from Rs. 225 per day to Rs. 259, raising their monthly salary from Rs. 5,850 to Rs. 6,734.

- Skilled workers' daily wages have been increased from Rs. 248 to Rs. 285, and their monthly salary will rise to Rs. 7,410 from Rs. 6,448.

- The daily wages of non-matriculate workers have been hiked to Rs. 259 from Rs. 225, which will increase their monthly wages to Rs. 6,734 from Rs. 5,850, according to Goswami.

- The wages of matriculates have been increased from Rs. 248 per day to Rs. 285 per day, and their monthly wages will rise to Rs. 7,410 from the existing Rs. 6,448.

- The wages for workers with a graduation degree and above have been increased from Rs. 270 per day to Rs. 310 per day. Their monthly salary will increase to Rs. 8,060 from Rs. 7,020.
