Is a Distance MBA in HR from Symbiosis Worth It? Seeking Urgent Advice on Costs and Market Value

As many friends must be aware of the admission into Symbiosis, my sister has completed her P.G. in Public Administration and a short-term course in computers. Presently, she is working as a consultant in a recruitment consultancy firm for the last one and a half years. Now, she wants to pursue an MBA in HR.

My questions are:

1. Is Symbiosis the best option considering the fact that she can only do the course in distance mode?
2. I have heard that Symbiosis has received approval from AICTE to offer an MBA from this year. Earlier, it used to provide PGDHRM.
3. What is the market preference between an MBA and PGDHRM?
4. What will be the cost involved in pursuing this course at Symbiosis?

Even IIM offers PG programs, not an MBA. IGNOU has received an award for the best courseware in Asia. Look around for good B-schools.

I had searched a lot and finally come to the conclusion that Symbiosis is the best for distance learning. Its course content is good, the exam pattern and assignment pattern are good. It is among the good institutes offering correspondence learning. So, before going for any course, consider this as well.

I am currently pursuing PGDHRM from Symbiosis, and I am in my second semester. The admission procedures, assignment submissions, and examinations provided by the university are hassle-free. They offer books authored mainly by IIM faculties. The examinations are easy and interactive.

The total fees for the PGDHRM program (2 years) amount to INR 23,000:
- INR 1,000 for the initial draft
- INR 14,000 for the first installment
- INR 6,000 for the second installment
- INR 3,000 for examination fees

I am currently pursuing my PDGHRM from Symbiosis University - Pune (Distance). The information provided by Nitin is very clear. This year, there have been no changes in the fee structure. The deadline for application submission and the payment of the 1st installment is July 18, 2007. You can obtain the application form from UTI Bank branches in Banjara Hills, Kukatpally, and Charminar, available only at these locations, for Rs. 930.

I highly recommend studying HR in distance mode at Symbiosis as it is an excellent place. The structure of their assignments is very well organized. I suggest acting promptly to secure admission as it is already late.

Thanks for your valuable replies and suggestions.

Now I am in deep need of your help again. For an urgent need in my hometown, I left for home forgetting to purchase the application form - Symbiosis, available at UTI bank branches. However, upon my return 15 days ago, the stocks were already depleted, and every branch informed me that they have placed more requisitions but have not received any response from the institute.

Yesterday, when I searched the Symbiosis website, I found a message stating that due to overwhelming response, the institute has decided to sell more forms, but only at the institute counter in Pune. I work in Delhi and do not have any friends in Pune.

Is there anyone who can help me with this situation? Does anyone have a spare form or could arrange one for me or guide me to a place where I can obtain this form? I am desperate. I assure you that I will pay the cost of the form in any way you wish.

Please, friends/seniors, please do me this favor. I do not want to forfeit another year of my career. Please treat this situation as an emergency.

Symbiosis Institute is the premier institute in India. If your sister wishes to do an MBA in HR, I feel she has made the correct decision. Let her pursue a full-time MBA. This will be greatly beneficial for her career.

Symbiosis is providing PGDBA with any one specialization in:

1. Marketing
2. Human Resources
3. Retail Management, etc.

It also offers PGDHRM (Post Graduate Diploma in Human Resources Management).

If one wants to pursue HR, then which one should be preferred - PGDBA (HR) or PGDHRM?

Could you please guide me on the difference between the two and which course is most sought after and seen as parallel to an MBA degree?

Hi Devyani,

I think both are the same, but if you are interested in HR, then do PGDHRM. There is no need to worry about the date on the SCDL form as the date has been extended. Instead of wasting time, it's better to fill and send the form. You will surely get admission.

If possible, it's better for you to go personally to SCDL and submit your form so that the time taken for the form to travel by post is saved.

It's Devyani again after a long time. Based on your valuable contribution, I joined PGDBA (HR) - 2007 batch. As existing students, I need more information from you. When can I sit for the exam, and what is the procedure? Can I get the model questionnaire from any previous exam? For the 1st-semester exam, do I need to prepare any assignments? I believe I have to fill the enrollment form and pay the exam fees before applying for the exam.

Please reply. Any friend other than Nitin and Neelima who has information is also requested to clarify the above confusions.
