High Attrition Woes: How Can I Keep Good Employees from Leaving So Soon?

shobi
Hi Friends,

Kindly help me out with this. The attrition rate in my company is very high. How can I retain good people? Should I add this clause in their Appointment Letter saying that they have to serve at least 1 year with this company?

Please help.

Sarah

Hi Sarah,

Just quoting a line in the Appointment clause will not be of any help. Attrition could be due to various reasons that we are all aware of:

1) Employee Dissatisfaction
2) Poor Package
3) Relocation
4) Career Growth and Higher studies
5) Personal Reasons
6) Bad reporting relationship
7) Non-availability of work - Idle
8) Job-related stress and Fatigue
9) Company fails to deliver something that was promised at the time of appointment, and so on...

You need to conduct an exhaustive exit analysis for each employee who is leaving and identify common reasons or trends for quitting. Addressing the majority of these issues can reduce the Attrition rate by 50%. Implementing appropriate retention measures can further decrease the Attrition rate.

So, Sarah, here you go...

Training is one of the most effective ways to control attrition and improve the morale of employees by providing them with proper training. It can enhance their satisfaction levels and also help in monitoring their managers, as people do not leave the organization; they leave their managers (refer to Premji's article on attrition). Providing employees with the confidence that they will be secure and that internal transfers are the only option can help retain talent.

Sometimes, what happens is that when some employees start to leave your company, it can trigger a chain reaction with other employees also thinking about leaving. Proper motivational training is needed to retain manpower. You have to take care of their individual goals in order to retain them.

Hello Sarah,

Employees join the employer but quit their supervisors. Kindly help me out with this.

I'll try. The attrition rate in my company is very high. How high is it? How many employees? How many employees left over the last 12 months?

How can I retain good people? Hire employees who have a talent for the job.

Should I add this clause in their Appointment Letter saying that they have to serve at least 1 year with this company? No. If new employees quit or get fired, the hiring system is not screening out the bad hires. If employees leave after 12 months, supervisors may not be doing their jobs as well as they should or pay rates are too low.

I was looking for the attachment. I would also like to hear from the doctoral students' work on this concept.
