Seeking Guidance: How Can I Transition from Recruitment Firm to Corporate HR Role?

Hello Seniors,

I need your suggestions. I joined a recruitment firm as an HR Executive - Generalist. Here, my profile involves taking care of all internal and external recruitment, handling petty cash, chasing and generating new clients, and managing admin activities. I have about 8 months of experience in this field but have not gained any exposure in a corporate setting yet. Please guide me on what I should learn to transition into a corporate role and how to make that transition. Additionally, please advise if I am on the right track.

I am also pursuing an MBA (a 3-year course) through correspondence. Due to personal reasons, I had to drop out after the 2nd year, but I plan to resume my studies after some time.

The correspondence courses don't add value to your resume. Therefore, you should have pursued a regular course or a part-time course. Also, handling petty cash, chasing and generating new clients are not typically included in an HR generalist's profile.

Can you please clarify your statement, "You said you have joined the recruitment firm, and on the other hand, you said you are not getting corporate exposure." These two lines have confused me. Do you mean that you are currently working with a consultancy? :)

Hey, don't worry. You'll definitely get a good job, and you are on the right track. The HR field requires at least a year of experience. Are you trying for jobs in MNCs? I would suggest you join LinkedIn and join the HR groups there; there are lots of jobs posted there.

I can understand your problem. The positions you are handling are not of a generalist profile (Frankly speaking). Nowadays, experience in Payroll and Statutory compliances matters a lot. Are you getting enough exposure to all these things? If yes, then don't worry, you will have a great future. But if not, you have to gain knowledge of all these aspects, and then you will definitely gain exposure in the corporate world. It doesn't matter what your education is, but practical knowledge of the generalist profile is crucial.

An MBA is just a stepping stone for your career growth. The first thing is to gain good experience in a generalist profile, and then you can consider further education, whether it is through distance learning or regular methods.

The generalist profile includes the following responsibilities:

1. Recruitment
2. Administration
3. Payroll processing
4. Statutory compliances
5. Employee Engagement
6. Performance appraisal
And many more responsibilities...

First and foremost, focus on gaining a good experience in these areas, and I am sure you will have significant exposure in the corporate world.

Try to learn various things related to HR, if not practically, then through first reading about the other functions of HR. Neha, first of all, relax. I don't know how big the recruitment firm you are attached to is, but one thing you should and must appreciate is that recruitment is an indispensable part of HR. The easiest way for you is to enter the recruitment team of a company where they are serving only internal recruitments. However, you must exhibit strong recruitment skills to them at the job interview. You are on the right track, don't worry. Complete your MBA, be a better person, a positive person, and the world would change for you. Just think positive.

I would advise you to join a practical training center for HR professionals in your area for Payroll, Statutory compliance, etc. Alternatively, you can approach your friends or people you know who are handling HR Generalist profiles and can guide you.
