How Can I Creatively Enhance Our Induction Booklet for New GETs? Seeking Your Ideas!

Mausam Joshi
Hi all,

Next month, 17 GETs are joining my organization. Every year, we hire around 10 GETs and I prepare a 10-day induction program for them. On the very first day, we give them an Induction booklet, which covers the welcome note by the MD, brief details of the company, information about the organizational structure, timings, lunch facility, details about the city, etc. I want help from all of you. What other details can be added to it? My boss wants it to be done in a very creative way, but it should be in the form of a booklet. Please help.

Hi Mausam,

I'm not a senior. Even I joined my company as a management trainee recently, but I can give you some tips. A brief introduction about the company's values, culture, mission, vision, goals, and policies like HR can also be included in the induction booklet. Then, you can conduct a 4-5 day inter where they can interact with all the senior people and a 1 or 2 weeks intra-department induction in which they can learn about other people's work and the activities of their department. Show them presentations about other departments' functions. Finally, as Rajesh said, ask them to write an induction report including a brief about every department which should be checked by the concerned person of that department and finally submitted to HR.

Hope this will help you.

Hi,

I had gone through an induction in my previous organization. That was something where the top management from the organization would talk to us through recorded CDs. I believe that actually boosts everything - the way they talk and their simplicity is inspiring. People love to climb the ladder.

There's a talk with the CMD of the company, followed by some MDs, then HR, and the employees coming to work in different departments; their respective heads talk about their department's functionalities. This gives a brief idea, but remember one thing: let these interviews be recorded for a maximum of 15 minutes for each individual, or else people get bored listening to long talks. However, this can be made very interesting with beautiful instrumental music and so on.

The other things on your list are perfect.

Dear Mausam,

Hi, I had faced a similar issue when I joined newly here, and subsequently, I tried to develop an induction kit, which consists of:

1. Induction manual describing the vision, mission, brief history of the company, list of top executives with hierarchy, timekeeping policy, leave policy, brief process of the company, product range, employees' benefits eligibility (as per cadre), housing policy, company's HR, Quality, Safety/Health, and environment policy, etc.

2. I have designed an Orientation program for new entrants. For experienced employees - 08 days, and for GET/Mgmt. Trainees - 15 days. The first day is for explaining about the organization, structure, HR Policy, discipline, rules and regulations, fire and safety awareness (do's and don'ts), explaining the organization structure and reporting pattern, and the names of department heads. I have made an orientation schedule with a reporting officer to whom new entrants approach to learn about the basic functions of each department.

3. After completion of the orientation training, I personally take new employees to the unit head for feedback and suggestions, if any, for further improvements, if required.

I think now you have a better idea about the orientation/induction program.

You can contact me via email at vip_rana2003@yahoo.com for additional details.

Dear Mr. Rana,

That was great from your side to give me good feedback on it. Yes, now I am getting clarity. It will be more helpful if you can forward me a soft copy of the Induction handbook for a new joiner, which we can hand out. Not a comprehensive set of policies.

Thanks in advance.
