Confused About Choosing Between a PhD and NET for a Career in HR Academia? Let's Discuss!

Hi all, I'm a bit confused between preparing for NET and PhD. I'm an MBA in HR. I want to be a lecturer or professor of HR. I want to pursue higher studies to enhance my knowledge. I'm baffled by the fact that most colleges give preference to a PhD qualified rather than a NET qualified.

Choosing Between NET and PhD

1) My first doubt is whether I should go for a PhD or take the NET exam to be highly qualified and employable with a good salary.

2) My second doubt is if I go for NET and clear it, would there be any need to do a PhD at all or otherwise.

Even after qualifying for NET, you will still have to pursue a Ph.D. Do not compare the importance of the two, as the purpose of each is different.

Importance of NET:

If you qualify for NET, you become eligible for appointment as an Assistant Professor (Lecturer). Final appointment, of course, will depend upon your interview performance.

Importance of Ph.D.:

1. Provides eligibility for lectureship only in some cases where candidates are exempted from NET, not in all cases.
2. A Ph.D. is important for increments and is mandatory for promotion.

Whether or not you qualify for NET, it would be advisable to start working on a Ph.D. as it takes a long time and dedicated effort to complete. NET is held twice a year, so my advice would be to keep appearing for it until you qualify. If you manage to score high in NET and qualify for JRF (Junior Research Fellowship), you will be paid for pursuing research.

Here, I would like to ask you one more thing: is there any distance learning course I can pursue after my MBA? My area of interest is "Training & Development." Are there any certificate courses that can enhance my knowledge and add value to my CV through distance learning? Also, if there are any regular courses available in Lucknow and Bhopal, please let me know. I would highly appreciate your reply.

Hi Asha,

There are many distance learning courses you can pursue after an MBA. However, the key is to keep focus on your ultimate goal. If you wish to pursue teaching and research, I don't think you need to take any additional courses. If you aim to strengthen your CV, I suggest you consider appearing for the SHRM certification exam.

I have qualified for UGC NET June 2012 in HRM. I am also pursuing the ISTD Diploma in T&D. I want to know the procedure for getting admission to a good quality PhD program. Please help me in this regard urgently.
