Seeking Advice: Should I Pursue an MSW or PG Diploma in Labor Law for HR Career Growth?

pooja_1september
I am an MBA in HR with five years of experience in HR. I now wish to pursue an MSW in labor management of industrial relations or personnel management of labor law. I have searched online but have not been able to find enough information. Alternatively, should I consider a PG Diploma in labor law? However, I would have to do it through correspondence or privately. Please suggest some reputable universities or institutes. I am looking forward to your input.

Only in Chennai can you pursue an MSW course through correspondence. Nowhere else will you find this course. Since you already have an MBA, consider enrolling in some diploma courses in labor laws.

It is your wish and comfort to choose either regular or correspondence mode of study. If you opt for regular classes, you must pass the entrance test conducted by the university. Please log on to the website for more information:

Bharathiar University, Coimbatore
www.bu.ac.in
Madras University, Chennai

Thank you.

You can do it in Gujarat as well from any of the universities. I suggest "Maharaja Sayajirao University, Vadodara, Gujarat" and "Sardar Patel University, Vallabh Vidyanagar, Gujarat."

If you need any information regarding this, feel free to ask.

Think about whether you prefer personnel management or HR. You would be better off focusing on labor law if HR is more aligned with core-generalists or staffing and recruitment. I suggest pursuing core HR along with labor law as a good option.

Dear Pooja, my suggestion is don't go for MSW because you already did an MBA (HR). Even though MSW (HR) has some similar subjects, MBA does not cover Labour Laws and fieldwork. When you have already completed your master's, I recommend pursuing a PG Diploma in Labour Laws with regular classes as it will provide you with a clear understanding of labour laws.

I did my MSW (HR) in Mangalore and currently work as an HR & Admin Officer. Knowledge of labour laws has been immensely helpful in my career.

I would suggest Madurai Kamaraj University, Chennai for Labour Laws. I am a postgraduate in Labour Laws and Administrative Laws from this university. Please visit their website for correspondence courses.

As an HR professional with an MBA and five years of experience, I don't believe there is a necessity to pursue any additional degrees or diplomas post-MBA. Simply obtaining another degree or diploma won't significantly alter your career trajectory.

If you lack exposure to labor laws during your five years in the field, I recommend self-studying important laws. By taking the initiative to learn independently, you can gain more knowledge than just acquiring another degree or diploma.

Dear Pooja, As per my knowledge, an MSW (Master of Social Work) cannot be pursued through correspondence. It's a regular course that involves an in-depth study of the subjects through fieldwork. Additionally, most institutions have eliminated the specialization phase in MSW. Without the specialization subjects, I don't think it's worth pursuing the regular MSW course.

It's better to opt for SHRM, where it can truly add value to your career.

If you want to pursue an MSW, consider enrolling in a regular college. I don't think they offer an MSW in Personnel Management and Industrial Relations through correspondence. With your experience in HR, obtaining an MSW might not be necessary. Annamalai University and Madurai Kamaraj University offer MSW programs, but they focus on other specializations.
