Leave Calculation Dilemma: How Should We Count Days Off in This Scenario?

Presuming a case that XYZ organization has a weekly off on all Saturdays and Sundays, and there's a holiday on Friday. If an employee takes leave on Wednesday, Thursday, and Monday, how many days should the leave be calculated? Three days or six days?

If it is authorized leave and sanctioned by the reporting manager, then it would be only a 3-day leave.

Leave Calculation in Organizations with a 5-Day Work Week

Normally, organizations that operate on a 5-day work week will have an employee manual explicitly stating that taking leave both before and after holidays is not possible. In such cases, I have encountered organizations that will deduct the full 6 days.

There are institutions that provide 30 working days of leave in a year by combining casual, sick, and personal leave. These organizations will deduct only the actual working days, which amounts to 3 days in your case.

Leave rules are separate for factories and establishments. In establishments, leave rules vary across different states.

As per the Factories Act, annual leave is calculated based on three days, while casual leave depends on the company's policy.
